I am thinking that I would like to buy a Liberty Dollar and a Ron Paul Dollar for long-term numismatic purposes. I realize that I will have to pay a lot (>$100 each ). I'm looking for opinions regarding their potential to become collectables in the future. Thank you.

I think that they are collectable now. But is buying them now at $100 with the goal of them inceasing in value beyond their current $100 price at today's price of silver a good idea? My guess is no.

Sounds like an honest answer because it's not what I wanted to hear. Maybe I'll wait for things to cool off on eBay for a while. Any idea how many $20 pieces made it into distribution/circulation before the Feds made their move?

In a few years after Ron Paul has lost (unfortunately) their value will drop to close to spot price.

I think you nailed it. Ron Paul is a long shot and so is the value of anything related to him. Sad but true...

I think that I will end up buying some Ron Paul stuff in the future after the prices drop, but not for an investment. I just want to remember him for having fought the good fight and for standing up against all opposition to tell the truth.

Very sad. The American people actually had a chance to get back to following the Constitution, and they chose not to. Go figure.
I'm also going to wait for a while before I make my purchase(s).

Just about buying anything in coins right now is extreamely risky. This coin collecting boom, the utterly fantastic jump in Silver prices, the vast amount of books on coins appearing is just making the purchase of almost any coin a chance. If you really know what your doing in coins, it still is a risk. There are more and more counterfeits poping up and the people that used to say buy a coin only if slabbed by a TPG is the way to go. This too is a failure do to the counterfeiters are also making the plastic slabs.
Hold on to your money until some of this subsides.

I saw an ad for the newest Liberty Dollars in the most recent issue of Coin World. Received it yesterday.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

Some of the newer price guides are starting to list the Liberty Dollars.

I'd like to repeat. Hold off for a while. I've been collecting coins for well over 60 years. I've seen these booms in coins, Silver, Gold come and go before. If you purchase any coins at the high, you'll end up with a commodity that just sits for many, many years.
I used to go to coin shows 2 to 4 times a month. For now, I'm letting that rest untill things subside a little.

justcarl, I'm sticking with your advice. I'm currently hoarding cash only (except for about $100 a week in pennies). Nearly all non-essential purchases are being curtailed.
Art, The Ron Paul dollar was minted by Norfed. They started selling at ridiculous prices after Norfed got raided.

We are definitely in a coin boom. Now the question is which of the following is happening?

Is this a coin boom because people are scared and it will end in a bust, possibly even the gold and silver, like all the other boom busts that are going on in the U.S. economy?

Is this a true inflation event and the best protection is buying real gold, silver and copper?

Remember Bed pans are not the best option. Remember at the very end of the 1923 German Hyperinflation people were buying anything that they could to protect their wealth. Some people bought huge amounts of bed pans, to bank their wealth.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

As I pointed out I've been collecting for well over 60 years and have gone through numerous ups and downs in Gold, Silver, Coins, etc. Right now we are in a coin collecting boom for sure. Just look at the offers on TV, all the new coin web sites, coin forums, coin books, coin magazines and on and on and on. Our Mint created the latest boom with thier baby dollars, State Quarters and virtually tons of commemoratives.
Try remembering what happened to US Stamps, Beanie Babies, Hot Wheel Cars, Football and Baseball Cards and for sure buy properties for no money down TV shows not long ago. Overkill, overkill, overkill.
Right now coin books are becoming as popular as breakfast cereals. Same with Home shopping networks and just about everywhere else. If you buy coins now, your buying at the high. Again, I suggest holding off untill this boom subsides. This should happen right after the 2009 Lincoln Cents come out and then fade away.
