Well....I felt the calling and just could not hold back any longer....so I had a massive zinc dump today...$650.

It's great dumping on Sunday...feels like I'm cheating "The System".

For those that live in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Colorado....you sohuld look into TCF Bank...as they are open 7 days a week and have coin accepting machines.

There are 2 within 15 miles of me. They have FREE TO MEMBERS "SCAN COIN" brand self serve lobby machines...and they are reasonably fast....nearly $400/hr accept rate. What is even better, is that they do not bag, but store into a big metal box....so it takes some serious dumping to fill one up....I filled it at $450 but it was not empty when I arrived.

I have 2 other local dump banks that I drop off about $200 at each bank, every week....when I get behind ....I can dump at the TCF Bank.

In comparison, I also belong to 2 other banks that have Free Dumping for customers...but they are CoinStar type machines and can only eat about $200/hr.....quite a bit slower.

Well, I feel much better after that purge!

Now, if I could only park 2 Ryedales on top of the TCF Scan Coin machine......

I thought I was doing good having two banks set up to take 8 - 10 bags a week from me. You really have a nice set up being able to dump zinc on your own. And you have several locations where you can do it. I do not have any banks in my community that have self serve coin counting. You really have it made. I am a little jealous.

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

Wow!
That must have felt good.
How did you get 400+ lbs. of zinc from vehicle to coin machine?

I have no shame!

I walk in with two 5 gal pails....$100 in each pail...brought my 4.5 yr old boy and my 3.0 year old girl.....I also bring 2 additional pails for the kids to stand on....I give them a soup can and they feed the machine...taking turns.......my little ZINC SLAVES!

I then make trips to the car returning empty pails an bringing back $100 pails.

2 other customers showed up ....I give up the machine and let them jump in....

The banker gal did ask if I wouldn't mind going to the other branch (4 miles away) after I filled the 1 box...she said they only had 2 boxes that week...thus one additional empty box....we were planning on doing that anyway....fed my ZINC SLAVES McDonalds between banks...

I have 2 local banks that I dump $200/bank/week....there I take in 4 x $50 bags and drop them off with a deposit slip...the gals have to feed their own Cummins JetSort and Bag....won't trust my count despite it is within a 10 - 15 cent OVER per bag. I just dump and run and check online balance later. I deliver the $50 bags...using recycled heavy plastic bank bags...I close with a light weight zip-tie-wrap...I can carry in all 4 bags in one trip.

I tend to leave the ZINC DUMP deposits in the dump bank...letting it build to a few thousand dollars...so, they feel I'm a serious customer....I've also told them all the story of my hoarding...and they often ask what my count is at...I recently told them 1 Million / working on my 4th ton! They are amazed!

We went to 2 banks

"I give them a soup can and they feed the machine...taking turns.......my little ZINC SLAVES!"

My kids have learned to run and hide when I say that I am going to the bank (they are a bit older). I use to force them to go because the Forum Credit Unions were charging 2% to customers to return coins, but 0% for kid customers. Now it is 0% for all customers.

i'm new to this info on copper, got into coin collecting and metals in my early teens but have made a recent return to collecting as an investment, mainly due to recent changes in bullion prices ....that said...silver has always been my thing, but copper?... due to my Lincoln cent collections that started me in coin collecting and the occasional cherry picking of gems and varieties has me intrigued....is it really worth the time?

Great strategy, Cessna!
Wish I had some zinc slaves - LOL.
I see you're back, glenn.
I'm also into silver but you have to be a fool to pass up $1 worth of copper for $.50.

Beer is my currency.

No - Not even close! I put away about $300 "Profit Potential" a week at current spot.....as you know, we can't scrap at this point...could sell on Ebay...but I'm holding out for at least 3X to 5X....10X Face Value.

....and on top of that, we eat at McDonalds for Free or nearly free..! We are super frugal and resourcful...whenever me or the wife go to McDonalds we take a quick glance in the trash and collect the proof of purchases on the bottom of the happy meal boxes....10 = 1 free happy meal...this is a reward program for our little guys.

We won't do any deep dumpster diving...but just grab what is on top...it is kind of a sport now to see just how cheap we can eat.

The local pizza shop had a deal like this...probably scored 30 free paizzas in 1 year.....just by clipping the proof of purchase from boxes in the trash.

I've been eating Free BK Whoppers for lunch for the past 3 years....just look at your sales reciept....it has a survey...a quick 3 minute call...you get a code...next Whopper is free with drink and fry...just have to buy the $1 drink + $1 fry...and I get an entire meal...$2 = full lunch. Again, I score these from the trash and get the codes in advance...keep a bunch in the car....when I get hungry...eat cheap.

We buy everything on a rebate credit card we pay off each month....we have collected and used over $15,000 in vehicle rebate programs due to the 2 cards we use....back about 10 years ago the deals were much better...we could stack up over $2000/yr in rebates....I figure we got half of a very nice car for free...just by knowing the rules. We still get $1000/yr...and ofter the credit card/manufacturer run a matching deal..

We pretty much live on the "10 for $10" sales weekly at the food store. Just about our entire food stock is 50% of normal price.

Other tips:
Ace Hardware has great sales/rebates....often buy items for nearly free.
Pabst beer often runs rebates....my current best beer average is $2.00/six pack...by buying 30 Beer "Cubes" and using rebate.
Red Dog Beer....retail price $9.99/30 Cube = $2.00/six!!!
Local bread outlet = 50 cents/loaf...vs $2.89/loaf.
Buy most NEW items on Ebay...just bought 50 CFL light bulbs for $1 each delivered...about 40% of best local price.
Garage sales can be gold mines....my kids have over 50% used clothes..

I've been this way my entire life...and have saved a $hlode of money. Take that savings and plow it back into wise investments....over time you look around and you own your home while your neighbor still has 10 to 15 years left on his mortgage.....

There is a lot of pleasure in free and cheap...esp when it is easy.

Such a deal!

Live Frugal! = Less Money Worries = More Happy...

Amazing that you managed to teach an old cheapskate like me a thing or two with that post. I will be looking into the proof of purchase and receipt deals...

Thanks

Sorry to hi-jack my own thread!!!! Here are a few more living cheap tips:

1) We have progressively dialed back the temperature in our home (Live in Michigan...brrrr cold!)..and started wearing slippers and flease pull overs....our standard winted temp is 65F. We have a programable thermostat that drops back to 55 while we sleep...and it is pretty "smart"...looks at pas days performance and anticipates when to start heat in morning to bring up to 65 by the time we wake up. We also have it dial back early in the PM so it is getting cool by the time we go to bet. Once in bed we are plenty warm. We are very used to the 65F...in fact when we visit neighbors at 72F...we feel like we are melting!

2) Close off all bedrooms throught the day. Keep doors closed.

3) If going shopping or out for the day....turn the heat OFF. the whole goal is to reduce the Delta T (temp. spread) between inside and outside....Law of thermodynamics...heat loss proportional to Delta T...

4) In winter, we store tons of milk (purchased on sale!) on the back stoop or in the garage....we prefer for it to freeze...it has an expansion plug molded in the side for this purpose....we then bring it in - put in fridge...it thaws and prevents fridge from running.....we do the same with meats and freezer items if we know we are in for a very serious freeze...had several sub-zero days of late...

5) I have a GM minivan and can achieve over 25 mpg on highway and over 22 mpg mixed bag driving through slow accel and coasting....you can have a big impact on mpg if you try.

6) Buy gasoline at Costco....beats local stations by 15 - 20 cents per gal.

7) Costco has lots of great deals. Also, you can't beat the food court...$1.50 for the best super big hotdog in the world and includes a drink with refills! BTW: these are kosher dogs...we are not Jewish...and I don't mean to offend....but we refer to them as "Jew-Dogs"...and my kids think that is the real name....we have to tell them to say it very quietly....we get a bit of a laugh out of it...

8) Changed all lighting in house to CFL...uses 25% energy. Lasts 10X as long - IF YOU LEAVE THEM ON FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES...they do not like a high duty cycle. I bought these for less than $1 each delivered off of Ebay...best local price is over $2.50/bulb.

I'll post more as I think of them....

Another $350 Sunday Zinc Dump! What a great feeling....my zinc pile was "crowning"!!!

Hey, I learned something today about the lobby coin machine (ScanCoin Model)...again, pretty fast...eat $350 in under 1 hour.

It tracks the coins by type...even tracks "Old" Penny and "New" Penny...because the guy that had to change the coin bin...told me it keeps track of TOTAL WEIGHT in the bin....at 300 lbs it is Full.

I thought that was neat!

Learning every day!

It's as easy as a simple call to check. You'll have better luck with credit unions though.

Only a couple of coppers per $100...probably not more that 9 in the total $350....and those were mostly nasty coppers that caused jams in my Ryedale...I just toss those into the Zinc return...to see if the lobby machine will eat them....it often rejects "felty", black and ultra-funky coins...but I just keep re-running them and it will take nearly all of them ...only put a few coins in the garbage can at the bank...

I'd say my high sensitivity zinc sort method iv VERY ACCURATE...does not return any coppers...

I knew there were some.. LOL. I was pretty confident you were very accurate though. Don't throw away those nasty ones though.. hand roll those puppies.

Sounds like a pretty good system. That ScanCoin machine seems reasonably fast.. about 600 a minute.. about twice as fast as a Coinstar. I couldn't see myself standing in front of a machine feeding it for a couple of hours though. I prefer to bag them at home and just drop them off at the bank. With all three bagging machines going I have the capability of bagging them up at 7600 coins per minute. Of course it takes a few minutes to change all those bags out. I usually drop off $600 in Zinc at the bank, which takes another 10 minutes. Most of the time I already have the zincs bagged. I run one of the bagging machines while I am sorting out the copper with the Ryedale.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

c140,
I think If I got 9 out of 350 I would throw out every penny I ever got in the future.
I know you take the good with the bad in any kind of dealing like this but dang that would hurt
