The penny and nickel melt ban was put in place in December 2006.
It put at least one industrial sized operation out of business, but the publicity around it also created a lot of hobby hoarders.
Since then, there have been a few attempts to pass laws that would either have eliminated the penny and/or the nickel or change their compositions. So far all of them have failed. Although one attempt I think came really close to succeeding and still might.
Lately it has been very quiet. I have not heard anything new since mid November.
A lot of hoarders had been doing so for quite a while before the melt ban. There were similar US melt bans for pennies from 1974 - 1978, and also a silver ban from 1967 - 1969.
