Evenin' all, New to the forums (Just registered about 5 mins ago) but I've been trolling for a couple days. Through this bit of trolling I have noticed people talking about Indian Head Pennies, someone will announce that they found one and everyone is all of a sudden jealous.
I was curious as to why this is because I haven't done any serious collecting (everything I have I got through being a cashier at a gas station) and I have an Indian Head sitting at home the only reason I kept it was the year 1909. Thanks for any help.

| Welcome, Mantokir. Congratulations on the circulating Indian find (that type of position is ideal for coin searching). It's not that nearly everyone here couldn't just go out and buy a top-notch Indian, it's the thrill of finding one while sorting for copper. It is rare, so rare that I doubt you'll see another (seriously, tell us if you do). I was lucky enough to find one in one of my first boxes, while others who sort way more than I do have yet to find one. The problem is I was spoiled early on, and now I expect one in every box! Have fun, and be aware, this is a great site with many intelligent people who know their stuff. |

Welcome to the forum Mantokir.
Indian Head pennies are a big deal for those who search penny rolls because of their scarcity. When the Lincoln cents were introduced in 1909 coin collectors started hoarding Indian Heads and over time the Indian Head penny became as scarce as hens teeth. Finding one in circulation is as hard as finding a Barber dime in with your change.
Indian heads go for at least $1.00 though certian dates sell for higher prices.
A 1909 Indian Head in the lowest grade sells for $3.50 per the Red Book. If there is a mint mark S on the back of the cent it goes for much more, the mint mark is located at the bottom and under the wreath.

Ahhh... so it's a proverbial gold nugget for coin collectors? I have to give credit to that position for now being able to spot oddities in coins, whether it's from feeling, seeing or hearing differences.

Thanks for that, I'll have to go home and look at it. It looks in pretty good shape but I'd have no clue as to what it would rate. |

| Welcome to the board Mantokir. It is the excitement of finding one in circulation. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen. I sort a lot of pennies and I had only found 3 last year until December when I found 6 more. I sent 1 of the ones I found in December to another member here for Xmas so he would know what they look like and it might lead to him finding his first one. I have BU and Proof Indian cents in my collection.. but I still get a thrill when I find an Indian while searching penny rolls.. even if it is low grade. I still haven't found one yet this year. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

| Well I had a guy that is big into coins ake a look at it, and it turned out to be a 1906, but he said it rated at extra fine (Give or take). Though after that short search for pricing and whatnot it was kind of a rush once I found out what it was. Let's just hope the bug doesn't bite too hard. :-) |

WELCOME TO THE FORUM AND THE WORLD OF COINS. I might add as Mr. Rogers would say, welcome to the world of make believe. I say that due to so many of us dream of finding coins in change like you did. Usually just a dream. Way to many coin collectors out there today for any coin to just go flying around in change. Of course there are always the many, many people with a jar, can, box, etc of old coins on top of the refrigerator waiting for a rainy day to be cashed in. So keep on watching your change and let us all know what else you find. |

| Start watching now more than ever. The reason is when times get bad and now with all this talk of a recession, many people reach for that jar, can, box, etc of change they have hidden away for that rainy day and spend it. Some of those may have been sitting for a long, long time. Then of course there is the horrible other part called home robberies. These also increase during bad times and if any coin collections are stollen, the robbers usually just spend the coins as cash. So keep on looking. |

| I just found my second Indian Head cent yesterday. just carl is correct. I've been talking with local retailers who've all seen a decline in business, and what they say supports his "rainy day" theory. It may also explain why I've been finding so many BU cents lately while sorting through my pennies (recently broken mint rolls)? |

Yet to find one IN a box....

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. | One of the banks I frequent for halves tell me they are being bombarded with coins in jars, cans, boxes. I think really think people are out of work so dumping those old containers of coins. |

| I agree. Although it is kind of sad, we should all be looking at the tellers' trays and asking our bank contacts to keep those hand rolled deposits for us. I am also thinking of asking a few businesses down the street to start saving their pennies, etc. for me (I know the owners well, so they would trust my counts). The coins are really starting to circulate again! |
