As most folks who scrap knows, quite often you can find change on the inside of a dryer. One of the first dryers I scrapped I found over $7 in change. I did not even know about it, I just heard something rattling around and after pulling the back off found all that change loose at the bottom. I picked up a dryer yesterday from an friend who has rent houses, he said the prior tennants left it and it did not seem to work (it was an older maytag model, even had a heavy solid brass knob on the dryer door, which is now in my brass bucket). When I picked it up I shook it a little to see if I could hear anything, and could not. When I got it home, I started processing it (it was laying on its side still in my truck) and noticed a couple of coins in the vent coming out of the dryer. I looked up in there and saw a gold mine. Apparently the shaking around in my truck on the way home loosened them up. I reached my arm in there and scooped out a fist full of coins AND a 20" heavy sterling silver necklace (in two pieces). I turned the dryer on its back and the coins poured out. The only thing I can think of is they got stuck in the fan on the inside. I took the front off, took the outside of the fan assembly off, and out came more. When it was all said and done, I ended up with 43 quarters, 58 dimes, 19 nickles, 78 pennies (total of $18.28), a 50 centavo coin and a 20" .925 necklace. The coins alone is about 3X what I would get for the dryer in scrap. Am still looking for the elusive gold I have heard people have found, but it will be hard to top this.

I don't know much about scrapping, but you would only get six dollars for a dryer? Is that worth it?
Congrats on the coin haul, by the way. |

Its worth it when you do two or three at a time with another 500lbs of scrap steel. It accumulates so fast you'd be surprised. On top of that you are keeping junk out of landfills and its trash you literally turn into cash. I love it!! |

Exactly, I keep all my steel appliances on a 16 ft flatbed until it is filled, then I take it in. You can also fill washers and dryer drums with smaller pieces of metal, which will make them heavier and worth more. I can get up to 2 tons on my flatbed if I arrange it right, and will get around $250 for it. That does make it worth it. |

Speaking of dryer lint, I have recently found out that it's good to start fires with. Just do a couple loads of laundry, take it out, place it under the brush or whatever, and light! |

I've scrapped roughly 20 or so dryers in the last year and I think the most I've ever found was a buck. My heart skipped a beat for a moment last night though as a box that I picked up with books and other goodies had an old bank bag in it. Sadly it was empty ;). |

For what is's worth, I compost dryer lint (as opposed to burning it or throwing it out). |
