Ok, so get this one. As some of you know, I am trying to build a penny pyramid to raise money for my school. I walked into a bank that I DONT'T have an acount with on purpose to see if they'd help me. MTA membership card at hand, I explained how these pennies were going towards a good cause, yet forget it. This 'lady' wouldn't budge. "No pennies for you!" was her stance. I swear that some of these lowly bank employees feel empowered by denying others services! It is the only power they have in life. How could they say no to helping students?!? Jerks!

May just be there policy. Why not just open an account, get your pennies, then if you like, close the account?

I know exactly what you mean. Some banks you go into they are very nice and helpful. They are glad to sell you pennies. I have had a couple of small banks that said they will save their pennies for me. I will go in every couple of weeks and pick them up. It was almost like I was providing a service for them.

But then there are other banks you go into and they just say sorry we don't sell pennies. I just say well " E-X-C-U-S-E me for thinking I could get pennies at a B-A-N-K ". I think they are just too lazy to go to the vault and get me a couple of bags. I wonder if legally they can refuse to sell me a legal currently circulating coin?

The same thing goes for returning your zincers. Some banks have no problem taking them, they say that's what we're here for. And other banks say we will sell them to you but we don't want them back. So I have been honest with them and tell them I will be depositing 8 - 10 bags of pennies a week, and I have two banks that said no problem, bring them in. So I am set up now to dump 20 bags per week.

I too know what you mean. Even the same bank, but another branch will differ as to 'policy'. I swear that some tellers are hoarding them for the bank. But it has to be that they are lazy and think that unless you own a business (which I do) you are lower than the dirt they walk on. I like the zinc bag deposit idea.

All and all, work with the banks that treat you well and to #%^L with the rest.

Grasshopper, try other banks you must.

Banks pay money to have coin processed, rolled, hauled and delivered. Some just accept this as a cost of doing business and don't make an issue of it - no different than paying salaries or the electric bill.

Other banks treat it as a cost center and try to minimize the costs by charging users or shooing off people that want coin, or limiting it to account holders.

I need to open MANY accounts!!! I won't say the word (because it's wrong to use, but you know it is anyway), but I'd swear they are calling me a _ _ _ when I walk out.

This is why there is a bank on every corner.. so if one doesn't treat you right you just walk across the street and do business with another. Maybe this lady used to work at a certain soup kitchen in New York. Fortunately I have not run into any penny nazis lately. If you hit enough banks it is bound to happen though. Remember to reward the banks that treat you nice. Open an account there.. apply for their Visa card, etc. My grandfather once told me you have to do business with your friends, because your enemies won't do business with you. My boss once pulled $100 million in corporate accounts from a major bank after they mistreated her on her personal account there. When they cried and pleaded with her not to do it she told them exactly why she was switching all the corporate accounts to their competitor. El Dee has it right. You just have to find out what the policy is at each branch.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Don't let the Ignorance of others controll your attitude!
remember... you do this because you enjoy it... if you let the negative people in the banks control more of your thoughts than the 5 minutes you are there, then they have won!!

I have 2 banks like this and have chosen to visit them 1 time a month just to freak em out.... ha! I control them now!!! lol (who knows maybe they will warm up to boyish charm)

I just keep telling myself if they where as smart as me & as Ambitious as me they all would be collecting copper at half price!!!

you relly need to feel sorry for them... lol

Happy Prospecting!

You are right, PennyProspector. Thanks for the sound advice. I'm a very low-key guy, but when someone crosses me, I tend to tense up with anger instead of realizing that it is the other person who has a problem and/or is unhappy with their lives/career choice(s), thus making it easier to let it go. I think someone else also hit the nail on the head. These bankers are WEAK and LAZY people in general. I'd bet a lot of them came from local DMV's.

HCBT brought up a fact that hit me, now that I have been stopping at different banks prospecting for copper. There does seem to be a bank on every corner. They are as thick as used car sales businesses. And I have also noticed most of them are in brand new buildings with all the fancy woodwork and marble floors. There must be a lot of profit in handling other people's money.

I had one bank that I have an account with that balked at giving me rolls all the time....so I made them my dump bank. They have a hard time turning down money. Even if its in pennies!

I still can't get over the picture in my head of the penny nazi "No pennies for You!"

For me it would take some of the fun and challenge out of it if you could just get as many pennies as you want anywhere. When you get turned down at a few it just makes it that much sweeter when you score. I like PennyProspector's approach where he makes sure to stop by once a month just for amusement. You can't take life too seriously.. nobody gets out of it alive. I also like No82s' approach where he allows dump banks to select themselves.

I think you are being a little harsh on banking folks calling them WEAK and LAZY people though, starwarsgeek171. That is painting with a really broad brush, and unfairly charactarizes the many good bankers most of us deal with on a daily basis in our copper quest. Most of those tellers are paid even less than teachers and often do not have benefits because bank management tries to save money by using mostly part timers. Part of this savings goes to pay for all that fancy woodwork and marble that NDFARMER has been seeing in the lobbies. Of course there is also quite a bit of profit in handling other people's money too.. especially if you can charge them high interest rates and fees. Think of all the nice folks that go out of their way to help you in your penny quest and don't get upset when you occasionally run into a teller that forgets that corporate policy requires them to give you a free smile.. but maybe not all the pennies you want.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I always feel sorry for the tellers. I know they are not getting paid enough to be hauling around heavy load of pennies. So I always try to go when they are not busy...I don't want to add to their stress. And I always thank them and sometimes even apologize for being such a pain in the a**.

However, the banks I don't feel sorry for. The banks are always happy to gouge us for some extra fees. So it is only fair when we get them to eat some fees for a change.

Side Note: I do get the impression that some of the tellers actually enjoy hauling around pennies as a break from their usual routine (as long as they are not busy).

It might help to ask them "how much they charge" to get pennies in for you. That way they have to look it up and see exactly what their policy actually is, and once they know what it is they may be less likely to tell you no. (It might be something like "as long as you don't go over $xxx per month in coin, there's no fee) Not only that, but then you'll feel less guilty because you'll know you're not asking for something that's out of what's expected of them.

Yeah, I'm a total newb to this whole copper penny hoarding thing. At the beginning of the week, I stopped by my regular branch and asked for a $25 box of pennies and there eyes bulged out of there heads. They came back and said they could get some in later in the week and that they would call me (haven't heard from them yet). Today I stopped by a different branch and I said "I'd like $25-$50 in pennies please". The manager behind the teller heard me and came over and said "I only have enough to give you $25". I said "that'l do". They even gave me my first canvas bag. :) I felt like a bank robber walking out with all that loot in the bank bag.

So, I think it's just try other banks. :)

Here is what I have had to say twice because of a lazy or rude teller. I went to the manager to say this.

"I just want to let you know I am shopping for a new bank. I just bought a new house on such&such street and want a bank close to my home. I have a hobby of collecting coins so I asked one of your tellers if I could buy some coins. I was not happy with the way she responded to my request. This was a test to see what kind of customer service I could expect."

and then I thanked the mgr and left. I would not elaborate.

=======================================================

At my regular bank (this has happened a few times) I walk in and one of the vault tellers recognizes me and holds up one of her fingers in my direction. NO! not what you are thinking. She is asking me if I want one or two boxes, then they are waiting for me when I get to the window.

Give it a few days and go back in and put a "1 million dollar candy bar" on the counter
and say just thinking of you and smile. You will make her day. They probably have not made that
candy bar in years. Just a simple hershey bar will do, build that relationship and she will help
you over time. She probably had somthing happen in her life that is getting the best of her.

As HCBTT said, try to treat the banks that treat you right. The bank closest to my house ALWAYS has an additude when I walk in, whether I want pennies, make a withdraw, or make a deposit. A co-worker goes to church with the president and says he is the same way, so it stems from him. So next week that account will be closed.

Maybe some banks will open up more when they receive the new pennies, quarters, and dollars seeing many are at least small time collectors and it would be hard to refuse masses of people. It amazes me whenever a new quarter comes out, I usually get three or four coins, but they ask me "how many ROLLS do you want?" or "will one BOX be enough?"

HoardCopper, It was too broad a stroke (as a teacher, I should know better, especially since teachers themselves are a prime target for ridicule). In addition, I conveniently left out the fact that the assistant manager of my closest bank treats me extremely fairly (considering her bank doesn't make a penny off of me), and has even offered to put in orders for me every week from now on (and this is the bank where I always find the high Cu percentages and many wheats)!
She treats me with respect, even though the other tellers are smirking/frowning. And, as Horgad said, I always go out of my way to thank her (perhaps flowers or candy will be in order - although that could send the wrong message...).
However, I think you guys are missing the main point. I was TESTING this bank on purpose, and was in shock that they wouldn't take the opportunity to help the local students out. Mind you...NOT ONE ROLL was offered!

I don't have a problem with buying my pennies but my question is for those who Ryedale sort is how are you treated when you return your zinc cents?

A lot of that depends on how many you are returning. Just like you get treated differently at different banks when buying pennies, you will get treated differently at different branches when returning zincs. Returning zincs is probably the most challenging part of the operation for me, and probably for several others. You probably want to spread your action out a little bit between banks and branches. If the volumes you turn in at each bank are low you will stay under the radar. If you trundle past the bank president in the lobby with 400 pounds of zinc on a cart every day for a week you will probably get noticed.. and he is probably going to want to have a little talk with you about your bad habit. Ideally you will find a bank or credit union with a free counting machine in the lobby. As banks are trying to become more customer service oriented this is becoming more common. Next best is a bank that will take them loose in a bag and count them for you. Next best after that is a bank that will take them loose in a bag if you have a good counting machine and can do exact counts. Failing all the above we get to rolling. Some banks will only take coins if they are rolled. Not really a problem if you happen to have an automatic rolling machine or 2 in your stable. But real rolling machines are kind of expensive. Hand rolling is always an option, but you will quickly tire of this. So ask around at your banks and find out how receptive they are to you turning in a few pennies every week.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I always believe you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar and have run across a lot of bad tellers and managers. It seems to be specific to one branch and not a reflection of the bank. I just avoid those branches.
Establish a relationship and reward the good banks with donuts or bags of candy, etc. You can cultivate an atmosphere whereby they actually look forward to your visit. A couple of dump banks with self serve machines that I "take advantage of" by filling bags and bins 9 out of 10 visits get a lot of help from me by hauling bags and rolling bins, etc. helping with the machine will also get you access to internal reject trays that hold all sorts of good stuff.
I also set up a contest whereby I put up a dollar bill or 2 halves when I come in and have everyone write their best guess of what my total will be. Closest guess high or low wins. They really love that. I also tell them exactly what I am up to - looking for silver, wheats and odd coins as well as cleaning copper out of the penny population. As a result, many tellers save coins for me.
Some have brought in their personal silver when they know I'll be coming and asked what it's worth. I tell them and usually offer them about half of spot. They are usually happy to sell it.
A surefire way to get your coins is to make a small deposit in your account first. If they don't have it on hand, most will offer to order what you need.

I've intentionally opted out of direct deposit for my paycheck as I've found that the personal interaction with the tellers at my primary bank has really paid off. This is a Chase bank, but something seems to be happening. I'm not certain what this indicates, but all but one of my known tellers have disappeared. The one remaining teller is very tight-lipped about what happened to them. The other day, she just looked me in the eye and said, "I can't tell you, but it isn't good."

When I visit the bank without a paycheck in hand, the revolving door tellers try to make me feel lousy by complaining the cart isn't nearby or they don't feel like going back to the vault. Doesn't work and I even offer to have a seat for a few minutes while they take care of another customer or two. I just smile and be polite.

With paycheck in hand, though, I feel like I'm Jed Clampett meeting with Milburn Drysdale at the bank. They can't do enough for me. Want some coffee? Need a few boxes of pennies today? Let's talk about those football/baseball/basketball/hockey games over the weekend. Weren't they great?

To paraphrase Mrs. Drysdale, "Those dreadful copper hoarders......"

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

You are exactly right. I always go inside, good or bad weather. When the bank employees get to know you in a positive way, all kinds of good things can happen. Cash, or check, in hand and you will get even more done. They do seem to always want to BS with me about whatever....
