I picked up $100 of pennies last Friday and $50 of them are bank wrapped rolls.
They appear to be BU rolls; you can see on each end that they are 2010 D pennies. However, one of the rolls has a zinc from a different date.
I know someone explained why they make dirty rolls.
It is to prevent people from collecting those rolls and allowing the pennies to circulate?

Armoreds don't care about mint coin all they care about is getting it wrapped and out the door. They use the same machines to wrap mint coin as they do circtulated coin so it ist probably just an "left over" coin from wrapping earlier or they were wrapping circulated and than switched over to mint coin. |

Yes, I'm sure they cannot be bothered with worying about what coins are there. If they did, we would not find anything ever. |

I am thinking it is to negate the collector from hoarding the new coins...last year I came across several new boxes of pennies but each roll had a dirty coin or two in it. |

I seem to remember this starting back in the early 70's to keep collectors from hoarding BU rolls. Seems they intentionally threw dirty pennies in the mix so you could never get solid BU rolls. If it was truly just leftover dirty coins from rolling circ stuff the distribution would probably be different. You would have several rolls with lots of dirty pennies, some with a few, and several with no contamination. When you consistantly get 2-3 dirty coins in each roll it makes you think they are mixing this way intentionally. |
