Hi all-

I know this might sound a little weird, but I have been interested in getting a full sterling tea set and a full sterling silverware set.

I know this might be a bit of an oxymoron, but are there cheap silver sets out there? I know absolutely nothing about this field, but I am eager to learn. I'm not really interested in a rare antique set, but what are some contemporary tea and silverware sets or typically close-to-spot collections? Any names or styles come to mind?

Thanks, wags

I would ask local coin dealers and pawn shops if they ever get full sets brought in. Since they buy them for a percentage of spot, you could offer to buy it at spot (which would be slightly better than the refinery and hence worthwhile to them).

i don't know anything about tea sets but (1) there is a lot of plated stuff out there, and (2) its probably the same mfrs that make the utensils.

on utensils, you can buy on ebay for around spot, and this is about 25% of what they would cost new. of course its used and has minor scratches (utensils), but i bought some. i figured i would probably never be able to buy this again.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

Ive been wondering that too, I thought it would be cool if someone offered it where you can purchase the set one by one, all silver. There could also be add ons and what not. With good marketing, I think it would be a sealed deal. Nickelmeister, whats a range on a set (also is 8 to a set standard)?

You can add pieces one by one on some expensive sets. My sister in law has a set like that and she added to it over time.I just can't think of the name of the Co. right now.

Hi there NM,

I'm serious but I'm still in the "research" phase. You don't need to go through the trouble- any names spring to mind? I have ebay with its millions of pictures... I have seen several sets apparently go for spot in the -completed listing- section!

Thanks, wags

I see in another thread you are offering to trade gold for 90% junk silver. Would you like to trade gold for sterling flatware? PM me.

The best thing about silver eating utensils is they are germ free. Silver acts as a bactericidal. If TSHTF... eating off silver could keep you from getting sick. Same with drinking water. Store you emergency water with silver coins.

Hope NM has some good deals you like.

Gorham makes nice stuff (my favorite)...Towle as well. The thing about sterling silver flatware and such is that it takes some research to know about the different makers' marks and what they mean (cause there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of different marks out there. Knock-offs are out there as well, so tread carefully and know what you're looking for. Ebay is a great place to pick up silverware on the cheap, as long as the seller provides lots of pictures and a detailed description.

I always look for the maker's mark to see if it lines up with the date or product line, the "STERLING" or "925" mark, and, if not provided, the total weight of the item so I can calculate the Ag content. You also have to watch out for pieces that may have solid sterling handles but stainless blades, or pieces that have "fillers" in them like candlesticks and such...And lots of silverplate that passes for solid sterling is out there. There are marks that let you know what it is if it doesn't explicitly say "silverplate". Hope this helps!

Ditto!

Knives usually have only 1/2 ozt. (or less) of silver in the hollow handles. Make sure you and the seller are using the same unit of measure. Oz & ozt are not the same! It helps to buy a battery powered scale to take with you. Head shops carry scales large enough you can weigh many pieces at a time.

Walk into a pawn shop that buys Sterling and ask something like: "what are you buying Sterling for today?" Answers will come back something like 70% to 85% of spot.

Reading this thread influenced me to go to ebay to check out the flatware scene...a bit pricey tonight I'm afraid but those Gorham Chantilly forks are hard to pass up...just gorgeous IMO.

Milburn Rose by Westmoreland is my favorite. Anything by Wallace is tops, too.

Check out Replacements.com for a complete list of patterns with photos. There are thousands of them!
