OK, as most people know, Catalytic Converters (CCs) can bring a fairly nice bit of change recycled as-is, cut straight off the vehicle. I was wondering if there was a way to cut out one or two of the middle-men and cash out on the profits??
A friend of mine has been parting out Land Rovers, and in the process has also been accumulating CCs from different sources and selling them to another guy locally for a premium. He's getting $145 each for the Large size CCs on the Rovers and each Car has TWO of them.
My question is this..... What do the "first tier" guys who buy the whole converters do with them? I know that the Catalyst inside the converter contains precious metals, I think maybe Platinum and maybe some other metals. What if a person, removed the shell and turned in the Catalyst themselves?? I think the guys who buy Catalyst buy in bulk quantities like a 2 or 3 Tons or more at a time. If this is the case, that would knock me far out of the game as the amount of capital it would take to acquire that many CC's would be very large. Or would it be worth it?
I also know they make commercial shears for removing the shell from CCs, which are an industrial grade tool that probably cost several thousand themselves. I also read another proficient way of removing the CC shells is with a Plasma Cutter, which I already have, along with several other basic metal fab tools.
I'm very curious and wondering whats involved in this market. Are there people that buy raw catalyst that have been removed in smaller quantities? Can anyone please shed some light on the subject?!? Thanks in advance!

| The cat market is a little out of my range of expertise, but I'd peruse the gold refiners forum for some answers. Most of your questions have probably already been answered there, and if they haven't, the good folks over there are extremely knowledgeable. You must be logged in to see this link. |

Miser-stro, if you don't mind, it would be great if you'd post a brief summary back here when you are done with your research. Quite coincidentally, I was perusing the "metal" section of ebay (which I didn't even know existed until yesterday) and was really surprised by the large number of converters that are for sale there as scrap. That, plus your posting, have me curious now.
I'm going to to a little research as well. If I learn anything of value, I'll summarize back here.
