Over the past 2 days I have sorted wheats, Canadians, Indians, foreigns, BU's, and corroded pennies from the 35,000 pennies I got. (I do this before I put them in the Ryedale that I just got ). After this $350 I will have sorted about $1,500 total. I was only a few rolls in when I noticed something unusual, there were about 5 BU 1972s pennies. I thought maybe I got someones dump from a collection mixed in with the other machine wrapped pennies. A few rolls and a few BU 1972s's later I was convinced I found a dump of BU's. I now went back through the ones I put away for the Ryedale and looked more carefully for BU's and I found quite a few more. When the first box was done I had 25 or so 1972s BU's and about 15 mixed BU's from mostly 1962d and 1964d. The next box was a bust and I was hoping that I would get more BU's, turns out I got plenty.
The first night I found many BU's and my second Indian head penny! A nice 1905. Today I got up and immediately started sorting. I got more and more BU's every roll, some rolls had up to 9 BU's in them. Then I found a 1945s wheat penny, it is in AMAZING condition, I would guess MS67 or MS68, I mean this guy looked like it was just made! I immediately put it in a 2x2 and kept on sorting. Many BU's, wheats, and Canadians later I spotted my first 1909. I grabbed it, started to flip it almost not wanting to look in case I didn't see a VDB (one of my biggest goals in sorting is to find a VDB.) and there it was! VDB! So I was really happy that I found one and I was even wondering earlier in the sort if I would ever find one.
The last notable coin would be another beautiful wheat, a 1951s in fantastic condition, not quite as good as the 1945s but still MS65 or MS66. (that's my guess I have no experience grading coins) So in the end I had the 2 nice wheats, a 1909VDB, and a 1905 Indian head penny, plus probably 2,000 Canadians mostly copper, up her in Michigan 5 Canadians a roll is a very common occurrence, but I average 2 or 3 a roll with probably only 5% of my rolls Canadian free. I also got about 120 wheats including the VDB a 1910, 1918, a 1919 and about 15 more pre-40's. I got one dime and one foreign, a coin from Uruguay, and 20 or so Kings.
Now back to the Bu's, these made all 11-12 hours of sorting fun, I found like I said, as many as 9 per roll. In the end I had about 300-400 1972s's, 250 1962d's, 200 1964d's, and a mix of about 200 BU's such as 1970s, 1968s, 1969s, 1971s, 1964, 1963d, 1963, 1962d, and 1962. (these are all guesses, I haven't counted yet.) I was amazed by how nice these things looked, these must have come straight from an original roll. If I dumped some out I could easily tell the difference from 2009's and these BU 's. These looked almost more white than red and if I tore A roll open on the side I could look in and snag the BU's just by looking at the sides of the coins. My stacks of BU's did get knocked over a few times and it looked awesome! It looked like those pictures you see in movies or books of stacks of gold coins with some tipped over and surrounding the stacks. If anyone could give me an idea of how much of a premium a roll of these would have or any other info about them I would appreciate it. Thanks.
I am going to try to get more BU's by ordering from the same bank. If anyone is interested in the BU's I might be willing to sell them. Pics if requested, but I don't have my camera right now. Thanks for reading,
Kiwiman

Nice Kiwi! Where in Michigan are you? I'm in Charlotte, near Lansing, and I'm thinking of buying a box or two to sort this week. |

Yes, very I love wheats. to me and I think most other finding a wheat is different and better than finding 52 cents in a roll. |

I have this one 1972 I got from my first box and it looked great and so I put it away in my collection folder thinking it was a nice one and that I would get more like it in the next boxes. When sorting conis and I see a really nice one I put it away into a folder. I have 2 folders One is my best and the second is my doubbles. I was looking at my collection and that 1972 is not even in the same league as my next best. I am starting to think it is a proof. It is Canadian so I dont know if there is a way to tell but the backing is mirror like on both sides.
Thats all I have to say about my 1972 find. |
