I was picking up my nickel and penny order today and asked the merchant teller if she ever gets Canadian coins and what does the bank with them.
She said that of course they don't accept them. I asked her what happens if they accidentally get Canadian coin.
She said that they can't give them to clients since it is foreign and they can't convert it.
She said they just throw it out
I told her that I would buy it if she gets any.

Why can't they convert them? Something doesn't sound right especially for a bank. Money is money no matter were it comes from. It sounds to me like a lazy employee doesn't want the hassle of a little x-tra work. |

Tossing them out is common practice. But, they should be able to give them away to you. One of my banks takes care of me....

You can't be sure that 'converting' is that easy.
I don't know the specifics if you have to be registered, licensed, ?what? in order to operate forex.
But from my experience, it is the same, foreign coins are the same as 'non-money' to a US bank. |

Funny thing is, we are very close to that Canadian coin being worth much more than the American counterpart. |

wal Mart does the same thing here. I know the girl that used to get them, but now they have a new rule. everything goes in the dumpster, that they don`t know what it is.

Once in a while, when I am in a conversation with tellers about their change machines or whatever, I ask what they do with the stuff that gets rejected. They usually say something like "Oh, we have a guy who takes it." Oh well. So far I haven't gotten to be that guy. |
