Hello,

I live in Canada and hand sort penny here, i started to have a large amount of US penny. I already started to put all wheat i can find separately but i wanted to make a little test with the remaining penny.

My goal is to sort a few pound of US cooper penny and try to get a scrap yard/metal dealer to buy them form me. Just to see if it will work and how much they will pay for them.

I go on You must be logged in to see this link. to see what year are cooper and the year 1982 seem listed both as cooper and zinc. Is it a error or there is both variety this year, and if so how i know which one is cooper and which one are zinc.

thanks for your time

As I understand it the US Mint began production of zinc one cent coins in late 1982 so most of them will be copper. The copper will weigh more 3.1 grams to 2.5 grams for zinc.Best if hand sorting to set all 1982 aside to weigh later.

I was taught to sort them by balancing two known pre-1982 pennies on a popsicle stick taped to a pen. Then secure one of the known copper pennies to the stick and remove the other. Place an unknown penny on the open end and if it balances than it is likely copper if not then it is likely zinc. Naturally a scale would work much better, but if you don't have one handy this works just as well.

another way to tell if one is copper or zinc it to bounce them on a hard surface, the copper pennies "ring" and the zinc is more just a thud
