I have seen the previews. I just worry about it starting a craze, there is already a bunch of scrappers in my neck of the woods.

It may also lead to more people putting out stuff instead of just throwing it away as they will know that people will come by and get it.

There are already ads all over Craigslist to haul away junk metal. A lot of people know about it already. I don't think to many converts will come from the general population as it can be quite a bit of work and the money to time ratio can be rather low.

Are you throwing that out?

I second that this is going to lead to more competition, which is already bordering on "fierce" in my neighborhood.

After "Pawn Stars" and "American Pickers" came out I noticed an increase in competition in those areas. Plus, more people were overpricing their similar items at yard sales. However, I also noticed a slight reverse effect in that there seemed to be a renewed interest in certain items and several new buyers.

Hopefully, as suggested above a few more people will leave metal out for pickup, but as so many are looking for an extra buck right now I doubt this will be the case.

Fortunately most reality shows like this have a few tidbits of useful information per half hour of mindless banter.

I just set the dvr to record both episodes, I hope it ain't dumb, most reality shows are. I agree the compitition is gettin ugly around here. There's one lady who's makin a killin on her looks alone (men are suckers), thankfully most of my customers are older women and apreciate a little chit chat not just grab & go.

I always try to take a few minutes to talk with the folks, and they usually seem to appreciate. I have had some refer me to friends of theirs that they know that need stuff hauled off due to the fact they told their friends I seemed like a nice fella who wasnt just there to "grab & go". A couple of times when I got to the address the ladies were in the midst of doing something heavy, so I helped them with what they were doing before I loaded the scrap.

....
Well I wish I could stumble upon a situation like that. Most of the time i get the "god d-mn garbage picker" look from inside the house. Honestly I think my truck frightens people..hey scrapping can be hard on a pickup.

Ignorant, its a pure waste of time for the viewer and Spike TV. This show won't last long.

I agree, I watched the two episodes last night and I do not think it will create much new competition.

I watched it as well. It was alright in that they got some nice scores, but I don't think I'll get addicted to it. Did anyone else think the one helper acted a lot like Chumley from Pawn Stars?

Are you throwing that out?

Horrible show. The guys were very unprofessional and it seemed to scripted like every other "reality" show. This is why I rarely even turn on the TV anymore. And wow, they really should invest in some proper tools. Cutting up wrought iron with a hacksaw...? LOL

I was hoping to get some new ideas from it, but that hope was pretty much dashed the first few minutes into the first show. And Flbandit, that helper and Chumley would really have a heck of a battle to see who was dumber. They would be the epitome of the title of that Jim Carrey movie, Dumb and Dumber.

Thats what I was thinking..picking up scrap in a van..NO tools? wtf..if Spikes thinks its funny to watch these guys throw metal from 2 floors up and copulate it up, then run out of room in their VAN..maybe they should watch me and my friends tow a scrap car that the brakes..AND the steering go out in..ended up having to buy some guy a new mailbox and garbage bin and drag the car to the scrapyard backwards bumper to bumper.

As predicted by some, a total waste of time. With the handouts some of them got they could afford at least one electric saw - assuming they don't keep breaking windows.

About the vans though:

A lot of scrappers use vans, especially in urban areas. The following are the major reasons:

1) It avoids harrassment by the authorities and tickets for having an unsecured load.

2) It deters theft. An unattended pickup truck bed full of metal, materials and/or tools is an invitation to thieves.

2) General discretion. The fewer people that see vehicles driving around overflowing with metal, the better. Less competition!

It's a good show. Perfectly ok to show your kids what happens later in life when you don't take school seriously.

You're implying that because they collect scrap metal they're uneducated?

Nope...something is wrong with these particular guys and some people may think this is what real New Yorkers are like. I know the difference. I love NY. I'd stay away from these guys though.

oh..I thought you were being sarcastic, I see what you were saying and I agree. My bad.
These are the type of guys I could picture stealing stuff, not doing construction clean up with a tv show. I deal with more professional salvage guys on a daily basis.

After watching episodes 1 & 2...

This likely won't create more competition, this looks too much like work. Those that understand the value of metals already have a stake in metals, weather it's Au, Ag, Cu, Al, Ni....

Picking up scrapping tips? Not likely (see chumley's hacksaw).... again, those in the know, already know. Those that don't know, are counting the number of "bleeps".

Will I watch more?... I did some hand sorting while it was on, fast forward commercials thanks to the DVR, so not a total loss. I think I will, as long as I have coin to sort. At the very least I can let my fellow Realcent comrades know if there's a second season. Watch for "Scrappers" season 1, available soon in the Auction Forum.....lol

I am watching it right now, it's funny in a train-wreck sort of way. And these guys look like they at the low end of the business, they don't act professionally and curse a lot.

The show won't inspire imitators as they don't seem to be making much; in fact it'll probably discourage people and make them look down on scrappers and New Yorkers. The show is going for the stereotypical NY City numbnuts.

Just watched 2 more episodes. Just like the car crash on the side of the road...you can't help but slow down and look. I can just see these guys getting on Letterman.
