Hey, RealCent...
1. What coins do you have in your own collections which are slabbed?
2. Did you buy them slabbed or send them off yourself?
3. If you sent them off yourself, how did you choose which service to use (PCGS, NGC, etc), and were you pleased with the results?
4. How do you decide which coins are worth sending in?

i have some things slabbed. Majority being morgans. I bought them all slabbed. I am getting ready in a week or so to send some coins in to ANACS to get graded. I chose them b.c anyone can send them in. you dont have to be a part of there club to get it sent in. and if it comes back cleaned ANACS will give you a ef- deatails cleaned where pcgs will give you a genuine. |

I would suggest that you go with ICG and not ANACS |

i have seen to many mistakes with ICG. I have seen some type 1 1917 Standing liberty quarters slabbed 1916 that i know are not 1916. there are certain die markers to tell a worn 1917 from a 1916. so I appreciate your input but NO ICG for me |

I have a few Morgans, Commemoratives, dimes, and a few of the new quarters(these because of the raw ones I have searched have been very poor quality and I think MS66 and above will increase in value, picked up cheap too).
I have not sent any coins in as of yet. |

I have a few, just a dime from the Omaha Bank hoard cause I thought it was interesting, a Thomas Jefferson dollar slabbed that I got for a dollar, and a 2009 MS 69 silver eagle that I got for 19$. I sent in a 1999 wide A M penny to be graded. I gave it to my coin dealer and he sent it in with a group of coins for me to NGC. I was very pleased, it came back as MS64 which was much better than I had anticipated. I sent it in because an Error coin dealer told me that he wont buy any coin worth over $300 that is not graded. It makes the coin easier to sell later, so I did it. |

I have a few things slabbed. Mostly new dollar coins like the Washington smooth edge coins in PCGS that I sent in to be graded. A few other presidents graded by NGC, some of them are errors and some are just nice grades all sent in by me. I have only a few cents graded by ANACS that I sent in as the 2009 DDR errors. Had more trouble with PCGS as far as them sending a few BU coins back to me as damaged when the should have come back as clipped. They kept the $40 error fee's for all the coins too. They are too damn expensive. NGC is just more expensive to join for a small timer like myself. If you send in a lot of coins all the time then they are best price and best grading for the money. ANACS is free to all but you don't get a high premium for your coins when you go to sell them. Most collectors think they are hacks and the coin is overgraded,as if a coin graded by ANACS or ICG as a ms67 would only be worth the money of a coin graded by PCGS as a ms64. |

Mostly morgans and commerative silver dollars slabbed by PCGS and NGC. Bought or were given to me already slabbed. Just my opinion but I would stay away from ICG as it is not one of the "big three" Only three I will buy or use is PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. But thats my opinion. |

I have been doing some background research regarding the TPGs and which ones are good to use. I don't know what you have seen misgraded, but You must be logged in to see this link. are just like PCGS's... if they made a mistake, then they will pay for their error.
And, I have no idea where you have found that ANACS is a more conservative grader than NGC or PCGS. If anything, ANACS gets low grades when it comes to consistency in grading (better than PCGS, though. But that is supposed to change with this '+' garbage)
Now, to be honest, I am a little bit biased towards ICG when it comes to Morgan Dollars. This series is my specialty and I am an avid VAM attributor. ICG and ANACS are great in this regard. They will attribute any VAM on their holders, not just a special group. The good part about ANACS is that they have a population report for these VAM's, but ICG does not. So, why am I biased towards ICG? Because they are totally approachable and helpful at coin shows. Randy Campbell (the owner) was at one point in time the head grader at ANACS. And ANACS lost a few other graders to ICG over the last few years. The talent pool is switching over to ICG from ANACS. To me, that means the future value of ANACS slabs is less, and ICG is more.
I also like the slabs from ICG much better than the ANACS slabs. And, I like the bulk pricing and flexibility of ICG. I once sent in 60+ coins and received them back in 3 weeks.
This is why I suggested ICG and not ANACS. It was a friendly suggestion based on my own personal experiences and knowledge. I wouldn't have suggested it if I thought you might get a raw deal. |

Zero (O) slabbed. The day I have to pay someone to grade and authenticate my coins is the day I'll give up collecting. |

For those who choose not to slab anything, do you have or buy or sell a lot of real key coins? I personally DON'T think I have any coins valued at $100 or more... So for that simple reason, I don't have any slabbed coins.
And I get your point, Abe. But would a buyer be as confident in your expertise as you are? I just think it might be a barrier if you're trying to sell big ticket items raw. That's one of the directions I was wanting to take the discussion... |

If I don't know the person who is selling the coin at a certain grade. I won't trust his grade for anything. If it's slabbed. At least I know a professional has given it that grade. Most of my high grade wheats are in slabs. |

I only have 2, a 1952S Quarter and a 1976S Proof Kennedy Half. I got them cheap with intentions of breaking them out. When I got them though, I liked the looks of them so I kept them. For my collections I like to buy raw coins as I have a few nice Dansco albums. I'm working on Proof Kennedy's, US Coins by Type, and Washington Quarters at the moment. |
Are you throwing that out? |

I don't have any slabbed coins, I think I've bought 2 or 3 but I broke them out to put into my Dansco albums. |

Way to many people are what I call slab happy. I've seen new coins worth a few dollars at best in slabs. For some resaon many people think if a coin is slabbed, they can sell it for a fortune. I don't like slabs, don't use them and will not send a coin in for slabbing. I know I've got some that possibly should be though for safety reasons alone. For example:
But as I said before, I collect coins not plastic. However, there is one consideration. Sales. If you plan on selling a coin, nothing gets attention like a slabbed coin by PCGS or NGC. Mostly PCGS. I've heard dealers say "Of course it costs a lot more, it's in a PCGS slab." |

I have a few slabs that I try and pick up cheap but have really started hunting some more here lately and picked a few off ebay, one NGC 1965 Quarter MS-66 for 2.75 yeasterday and a few more a little higher than that last week.
My question is I have a 1963 Franklin still in the plastic from the mint that was given to me the other day for helping a guy move, he got several of them in a silver buy like 10 years ago. The coin is emmaculant and I took it to the coin store and the guy graded it MS-66 but thought is might make 69 but he said to not take the wrapping off it to tell. Anyways this coin values at 600 buck in the Red book of lie's, but my question is should I have this coin slabbed and graded? Will they take the mint wrap off of it? How much will it cost me? I will try and get some pics of it on here tonight and let you guys take a look. |
