If you could turn your hoarding/sorting into a profitable business, would there be many of you that would quit your 9 to 5 job?

Sometimes I daydream about it :-)

Yes, if there was enough profit. Unfortunately there isnt :(

I think a day job keeps the coin sorting from going out of hand. For me I find that sorting $2k or more pennies a week puts a lot of wear on the body.

Think of it this way. With a Ryedale and enough money any of us could acquire and sort large volumes of coins, and maybe even have places to dump them.

However, if you are trying to turn them over [for a profit] it requires a lot of extra leg work, so smaller volume per week makes more sense. And this allows you to even think about spreading your hobby into silver and nickels searching.

IMHO, If i could quit my day job I wouldn't, because within my working life-span i feel the coppers will have been pulled from circulation. Which would leave me in a situation that would not be preferable for a 30-50 year old.

If I could....I would extract that last tooth, fill that last cavity, whatever......walk 5 feet away and flip a switch that started up 10 sorters and never look back

I agree with JobIII. I don't know how he can do $2000 a week, I'm hard pressed to process just enough to return $500 a week in zincs! I think as a group, we would best be served to keep an additional source of income flowing (this economy will get MUCH worse) and just stockpile, the day will come to cash in... but it isn't yet. Maybe when we can easily sell at twice face you can begin to turn a tidy profit, and will be glad you have amassed plenty of boxes ready to sell. If you want to daydream, fantasize about placing an ad on ebay (a year from now) for $50 face CU... and the bidding is already to $115... and the last minute sniping hasn't even started yet. Membership in this forum entitles you to be considered among the elite who are farsighted enough to realize that great profit will someday ensue for those who are clairvoyant enough to visualize that copper cents will soon disappear from circulation, as did silver, and that when the sheeple awaken to this... the bidding will go wild!

Hoard now and hold on!

Can't say to much about my business due to the type of work I am in, however if sorting were profitable enough to sustain my family, I would walk out in a heartbeat from my "day job".

Nah, I work for a gov't entity. The agency I work for does not worry about the economy too much in that "business is always booming". In times like this the "big boys" try to downsize my agency, however they also realize if they do so public safety would be jeopardized. Don't mean to riddle around the question, just can't disclose much of anything. :)

Nope I would not quit my day job. I use sorting for unwinding if I had to sort full time I wouldn't enjoy doing it.

I can appreciate your avatar.

Miller Lite is my second best everyday drinkin beer.

But we go through a lot of old bay around here. runnin out of Old-Bay is as bad a runnin out of coffee.

Just to stay on topic: If you had to depend on it for your survival. sorting would get real old real quick.

Like the difference between leisure fishing and commercial fishing.

Or leisure beer drinking and professional beer drinking.

If it paid the bills and was more profitable than working, I would quit in a second. Sorting can be done on my schedule. If you have enough Ryedales you can make the work load easier and be done faster. If your needs are to sort $5000 pennies a week this could be done in about 8 hours with 4 Ryedales.

But at 20% copper and selling for 1.4X face you are only making $400 profit a week ( if you can sell them all ) Then you have to include your pick-up and dump expenses.

If you could turn them over quickly at 2X face and had no limit on the amount you can pick-up and dump, then you should be able to support yourself just sorting.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

If it got to the point where I could double my money everytime I sorted I believe I would be tempted quit working and just sort more. Or at least sort half time and work half time. Actually my hubby and I are self employed so I definately could not just quit completely. Even working for myself I still dont get to sort all that I would like to. Given the chance I could sort a whole lot more! The real problem though is finding a safe, fireproof way to store it!!

Professional beer drinking is a tax shelter, as I've explained before.

You start an aluminum recycling outfit.

You buy 30 cans at a time. Of course they are full of beer and have to be emptied, and are usually sold at a loss.

You can write those losses off against the copper sorting profits.

Of course there are travel expenses to places where cans need to be emptied.

You also may need help procuring and emptying the cans. labor.

Consider the possibilities.

Good guess, but not close. If I were an IRS agent I think I would have quit many years ago. No, as I posted earlier, think more public safety. I think of those guys as more of a nuisance. Ha!

I think since, "thin mints, and USA" can be spelled within your alias my best guess is you are affiliated with the Girl Scouts of America and you sell or distribute girl scout cookies.

And if I had your job I too would be both passionate and have no desire to leave the business!

Was I close?
