I have just been sorting halves for the last 3 weeks or so and have found a lot of 40% halves and a handful of 90%.
It is hard for me though to think of selling them. I kind of look at them as a trophy for my sorting.
Do most of you hold onto the halves you find? If you hold onto them and don't sell, is it strictly because you are saving them for the silver or is a combination of holding onto them for the silver and keeping them as a trophy?

I have found a lot of 90% silver coins during my lifetime but the ones I find now will be with me for a very long time. |

Holding onto every one I find (and BUY). One more tragic step by the governments of this world and you will be glad you kept yours too. |

Hold. The best (or worst) is yet to come.
Why would you trade your real money for fiat? |

Holding.
If we go hungry for three days, or need medicine for dire medical emergency... I will think about selling. You know, basic TSHTF stuff. |

Well I dont usually buy 40% silver so was just curious if some of you would sell your 40% to buy 90% or to buy gold
However, since I found this 40% it is a little harder for me to consider letting go |

Selling 40% to get 90% or silver/gold bullion would be a good move.
The day may come when PM's cannot be purchased at any price using fiat currency due to permanent backwardation. (Read Antal Fekete's Gold University Live webpage.)
BTW. Sounds like you are making some great finds! Do you know your percentages? Country's tracking thread is making me start up sorting raw coins again. My first $1,000 bag arrives Tuesday. |

That is exactly what I did. I had accumulated quite a store of 40%, and took them to Dallas Gold & Silver. After I sold them I took out of that amount what I had into it for face value, then took the rest and purchased silver bullion. I purchased 252 ounces, and since I had already taken out the FV, it was free silver. |

How long did it take you to accumulate ~2500 40% halves? |

Holding. Again, it's hard to beat any kind of silver at face value. |

Wow. Awesome job! How many hours did you average per week over four years? |

The little silver I find is being held.
College is coming up. Hopefully the silver price is headed that way too. |

Not really that many. I pick up four boxes every other week from my supply bank, which comes out to a little over 100 boxes per year. And when I go to visit kin every couple of months (they live 150 miles away) I have a specific route I take, and a couple of times have snagged better than 200 40% each time. And once a week will also go by a couple of banks on the way home from work, and they produce occasionally, but not that steady. I have kept every 90% I have found, which totals about 1200 coins. |

Thanks Wayne,
In the mid-70's some cashiers & tellers were downright hostile to my silver coin searches. The percentages were so low, I decided it was not worth the effort anymore. In fact, my whole family gave up sorting coins.
Something must have changed. Maybe the banks wore out their silver coin separating machines and silver has crept back into circulation from old coin collections.
Anyway, my first bag arrives today. I will get started again. You make it sound very "do-able". |

Thanks, Nickelless,
I gave your site a quick scan. Will have to read up on it later, tonight (AFTER sorting halves!).
We are doing everything we can to get ready for the unexpected. We grow veggies in our backyard, put-up all we can.
I really need a new place to do all this on. I have run out of room for the things I want to do. Storage cellar with at least 3 feet of dirt on top, large water storage, etc., etc. |

Holding for now. Might sell some 40's and buy some .999 and more gold. |

I basically try to avoid being a problem for them, such as ordering a lot of coins. I keep it down to four boxes at one time every couple of weeks so I do not get them irritated, and do not bring my dumps back to them. Time to time I will make up a batch of sugar coated pecans (since I make them they are relatively cheap) and they love them. Sometimes they will also have the small dollar coins they get tired of counting, so I will buy them to help them out, then spend them in the machines that take the dollar coins (I would be spending a dollar bill in there anyway). You just have to remember you will go thru periods of getting skunked, you just have to be persistant and keep at it. |
