I just bought this old Chinese coin from china off ebay. Price i bought at would be 50 % of spot. Took it to the coin shop and guy thought it was silver by the sound. Exact weight and all too. Well the chemical test didnt show it as silver (blue color ) we checked a morgan after which showed to be silver. Anyone intersted in my "silver alloy" coin

Why yes I am! Only on how to avoid counterfiet coins. I knew it was bound to happen. If metal prices continue to rise, betcha there will be many of these coming up on the market without the seller telling anyone they are fake.

Could you start a thread on the chemical test? I need to learn how to do that.

It would be useful to have a thread on this. Maybe someone that already has some known fakes could take pictures and start a "how to identify counterfeits" thread and the mods could make it a sticky?

Hoard now and hold on!

I had to go to the coin shop because I dont have one. I know you can scrape a little on to a block then drop a chemical onto it and it will turn blue if silver. He told me the best way to check without it is hit the item with a the metal part of a pencil (part that holds the eraser) and it should have the distinct silver bell ringing sound. I would be interested to know more about detecting fakes too.

He said he sees quite a few fake morgans and peace dollars too. He says the give away is the weight on them. He said the weight comes up short of what a normal US one would be

Like the author of that link says... struck in silver they are good enough now to fool most collectors. Drop them into a fake TPGS slab and it makes it even worse.
