I posted an ad stating I would buy pennies at $1.60 / pound.
A guy replies that he has a 5 gallon water jug filled with pennies. He weighs it on a bathroom scale, and says it weighs 148 pounds.
I ask him "Will $250 work out?"
An hour later, I was the proud owner of a jug filled with pennies!
I've only sorted a couple hundred from near the top, and I got 21% copper.
It's like a copper mine - the deeper I go, the more copper I'll get!

roughly
$1.47/lbs for pure copper cents
$1.80/lbs for pure zinc cents
divide that evenly you come to:
$1.64 per pound
However you have to consider that copper cents make up only about 20-30% total. Mooski will most likely profit either way (even 100% copper still equates to 1.15 x face)
Not too bad a deal if you can find people willing to sell them. |

I once offer to buy on cl for 1.60+ per pound and got blasted by every a-hole on craigslist.
Craigslist people in my area are a bunch of no-life jerks! |

Well mostly the comments go something like this;
there are more zinc coins that copper coins in circulation, so you should be paying more per pound.
And from this they drop off into a more offensive reply |

Yes by blasted I mean replied to in an offensive manner. They called me a crook and "the penny idiot"
My offer was to pay a fair price based on what I saw. I was looking for the sparkletts bottle full and to save someone the hassle of handling the coins.
But the idiots on CL actually thought I was trying to scam people by paying less than face.
Actually "the penny idiot" does not offend me much. I'm thinking of having t-shirts printed up. |

| Coinstar pays less than face if you want cash, you can either take it or leave it. People know this and take the hit anyway for the sake of convenience. There's no reasoning with some people, but replying to every complaint with the same impersonal form letter might convince a lot of them that they're not getting to you. You might suggest they post their own ad with a better offer if yours is so unreasonable. |
