yay! Just found one of the ones I was missing from my "only from the wild" Lincoln cent collection. With a mintage of ten million, this is one of the better ones... in about VF20 condition

Hoard now and hold on!

that's super. I rarely find mintmarked wheats (except I think I found half the mintage of the 57Ds)

Some of the worn ones I have to look at through two magnifying glasses, twisting and turning the cent just right in order to see what it is. It's nice to find one that is easily legible. You should post your finds on Uthminsta's penny tracking thread. It's alot of fun and some good finds there. Reading others discoveries is the next best thing to finding them yourself.

I found, in a purchase, a possible 14d...I think....very slick coin. You have to get the light just right. The angle just right. The position of the moon just right. And then and only then...it looks like a 14d. The 'd' is very readable but 4 is the question. Very worn and slick there.

What would you guys all say about this? Send it in for a professional grader? Even with a low grade, this is a key for the series... I bet there are several poor-1 examples of this one that have been slabbed. I actually used to have a poor-1 graded early large cent... I forget what year it was. 1794 or 95 I think. But I digress. What say you all about sending this one in?

MH made a suggestion about this in the wheat collection thread specifically addressing when it might be worth it to grade

MH said it was junk. I did see one on ebay. NGC graded AG-3. Buy it now like low $100's. That's what made me think of getting it graded. Mostly just to authenticate it. Not sure if anyone would want it though!

Danger you run is that the grading company won't (or won't be able to) verify it and it will get kicked back as 'unslabbable'

But you won't get your money back.

Can you get an "attribution and authentication" service though? Even if it's ungradable, they should be able to use their high tech stuff to let you know if you have what you think you have. After all, they are the experts... right? Right? Anyone? haha...

ANACS will holder it and mark special comments on slab usually.

You could mail it to me, and I could try using the macro cameras and x-ray machines at work to attempt to give you more information. The x-ray method didn't work well with slick buffalo nickels, but might work better with partial dates like yours.
