Doing so would encourage the US to do the same. The melt ban may be closer to being lifted than some of us may think.

From what i have read in the newspaper they intent to keep the penny legal tender for 5 years after it's removed from circulation to give time to everyone to turn their penny at the bank. If they remove it in 2010, probably what they have in mind since they will change every coins and bank note next year (they won't be a 2011 penny) in 2016 the penny won't be legal tender anymore, i guess it's mean any one will be free to melt them then.

But it's a lot of guess and many thing have time to change by then.
