So I had exactly 4 rolls of steel nickels to spend, and it felt like a grilled cheese night, so I went to walmart and got a bottle of ketchup, a pack of bread, and a pack of Kraft extra cheddar deluxe cheese. The cheese was marked 3.97 but rang up at the till as 5.79, so the total was way over what I had, and the cute broad running the till couldn't get anyone from the pantry section to check the price until after a few in-store phone calls. Anyway, I was so distracted by the time she confirmed that it was 3.97 that I forgot to ask for my 79 cents change in nickels. I glanced down with disgust at the 3 quarters and four pennies in my hand, until I realized that two of the pennies were copper, and one of the quarters was sweet frickin' silver.

I don't want to live in that neighborhood. Obviously some punk is stealing that silver from his grandmother, or elderly neighbor, or someone. That's about the only way it gets back into circulation these days. It gets filtered back out pretty quick, too...just like you're doing. Keep your eyes open, there's probably more. |

It doesn't have to be theft. As a teller, my wife used to see a couple people a month that would come in with a box of inherited coins/FRNs and turn them in for face value. Some people just are too stupid to know, others indeed could be thieves, but the stupid people are out there.

When I was a teenager I worked a register at McDonald's after school. People used to bring in coins and older bills that were obviously part of a collection and buy food with them fairly regularly. I never asked, but I assumed they were either stolen from dad's dresser drawer in the case of teenagers, or else inherited. I was pretty good friends with the shift manager and he let me trade out anything I wanted. I got quite a few silver certificates, buffalo nickels, and such that way, with the occasional silver coin thrown in.
One time a young guy came in and bought a meal with a handful of proof coins that he had obviously just cracked out some proof sets. Unfortunately he managed to scratch half of them up with the screw driver or whatever he used to open them, but I kept them anyway.

I had an employee at one of our other stores come in with four state quarters last spring because they looked fake next to 'regular' quarters. I talked her out of two of them and told her to keep her eyes open for a certain state to show up. Before long they pulled the other one out of the carwash changer. All five quarters from a 2003 silver proof set! |

I had a garage sale over the weekend and the morning was winding down. I sold a couple pieces of clothing for 25 cents each to get rid of the stuff. An elderly lady handed me a couple quarters and I heard a distinctive dull clang when the coins were dropped in my hand. Sure enough, one was a bright shinny 1964 silver quarter.
I suspect her husband has passed on and she's out spending his hoard from over 40 years ago. Told my wife to keep an eye out as we might get some in change around town. |
