I tried sorting halves 2 years ago and got skunked on sorting $1k and gave up after that.

I joined the half sorting club less than a month ago.

I have been throwing my finds into a big ziplock bag

Today, I went to one of my pick up banks and they had $90 in halves - 2 of them were 40%

After I sorted that $90, I decided to come home and organize my finds

Since I started, I have found silver: 24 40% and 4 90%

Not bad. I think people are turning in more coin lately with the bad economy.

You might try finding a bank that will order the bags for you. I found a bank about 30 miles from me that will order $1,000 bags for me. I did have to get an account there to do that ...and .... they Won't let me bring them back after I have sorted them so I have to find other places to get rid of them. Needless to say, I don't do it very often because it is a hassle to get rid of that many coins at a time. I have found a few silvers and many nearly uncirculated dates that I kept.

Its hard to get loose halves around me that are not dumps. If you can order boxes/bags thats the way to go. If you can get bags off coin counters where silver searchers dont dump, thats even better. The key to doing it is volume. If you give up after 1 skunk, you are selling yourself short. Some may go through 20+ boxes and not find one silver, but eventually you work your way to the bottom of the pallet and on to the next one with silver in it. Persistance is key.

If I had kept this up when I started (1978) instead of dropping out for 30 years, I'd be missing a mortgage now. The last 3 years has given me over 250oz AG sorting halves and nickels.

I hear you fb101. Wish I would have started sooner also. My father used to collect coins in the 60's. Never though twice about tossing back silver coins. Oh how I wish I was around then....

Well I have had good luck with asking for rolls that customers have turned in. Sometimes I think I get someones dumped halves but sometimes I find unsearched rolls (ie yesterday when I found two 40% halves in $90 of rolls)

I try to dump $250 at a time to get rid of them quickly.

I have also been spending the non-silver ones at gas stations and Walmart and the grocery store.

Just putting my story out there because I was the biggest sceptic for the last couple of years and I'm glad that I jumped into searching them.

I nave not seriously searched halves since 1976. I thought all coins still went through silver separating machines like they did in the 60's. Nuts! Have I missed out!

250 oz AG is GREAT! I gotta ask, though, how many hours did it take to amass this great find?

See if you can find a bank with coin counter. If so, just deposit your coins there, then time to time write a check to yourself from your dump bank to you main bank. I get my boxes from Chase, but Wells Fargo is my dump bank. I will dump several times at the WF then write a check to myself and deposit it at my Chase. That way also they are seeing activity on your WF account and less likely to question it.

I recently sold all of my 40% I had accumulated over the past several years (I kept all the 90%). Out of that amount I subtracted the face amount and took all of the rest and purchased silver bullion. I ended up purchasing 252 ounces (1 100 oz bar, 15 10 oz bars and 2 1 oz rounds). Since I removed the face amount I cashed in, that was 252 ounces of FREE silver. I love free silver!!!!!!!

Make sure you post your finds over in the tracking section. Country runs a great thread there! and conga rats on the finds... the sooner we can make silver disappear the faster it will go up in price. Free silver... just go get it!

Hoard now and hold on!

I did pay a premium on the bullion, but I paid for it ALL with the profit from 40%, hence the free silver.
