I have the ability to buy gold eagle coins at around 900 an coin (1 oz.)
Is there any thing i should be looking for to make sure they are real? Are these coins commonly faked?
Any thoughts?

I think this is too good to be true. Seller says he's from Tenn if any of you RC members in that area want to score some cheap gold coins.
May be too good to be true. This is an ad from Craigslist, though the seller posted the ad in states outside of the one he is in...odd? |

I would be cautious. The risk is greater especially if they are advertising out of state. |

Exactly. There has been a scam circulating on craigslist for a 2005 pontoon boat for a while, and the physical location is always out of state from the state that it is being listed in. They also suggest going thru ebay (which they provide a link). the linked to site looks just like ebay, but it is actually a website they created.
It makes no sense to sell them for 900 when they could easily get 1200 each from a coin dealer or bullion dealer. |

Actually they are asking $2K for two 1oz. coins... I figured there was something up when the picture he forwarded me of "his coin" had a 2009 $50 AGE, but his ad stated he has a 1997 and 1998 1oz. coins...
Too good to be true. i guess. |

Sounds like it's either a scam or someone is selling hot coins. |

give the case to the local neighborhood aspiring PI kid. Offer him $20 to solve the mystery. |

Thanks for the concern, I didn't end up buying these coins. There have been some crazy sales on CL these past couple weeks. All of them are slipping past me so when I saw this one I was immediately set to pounce on it. The info really clouded the more I prodded though.
I'm not much of a gold buyer anyways. And to be honest i wouldn't really know if some of the people selling on CL are fencing stolen items. The people i buy from seem to do their homework or at least have a basic understanding of their coins value. No one gives me too good of an offer unlike this one. |

I've gone to check out gold coins for sale on craigslist a few times in the past and always take my gram scale with me. The first time I got a really good deal on a 20.00 double eagle for 800.00 when gold was at 975.00 or so. The second time I went out the coin(s) weighed in pretty light and looked plated/fake, I kindly declined and walked out. I would only buy coins off of craiglist if you meet the person face to face and get a chance to look at the coins. |
