Picked up 3 boxes during lunch hour today.
One box was entirely zinc!
From the ends, all the rolls looked like new 2007s. Two (2) rolls had circulated pennies on the end, so I opened them as well as a random roll. The teasers were zinc, and the random roll was entirely uncirculated 2007.
My guess is that once the vault at the bank was cleared out, the bank ordered boxes from the armored service, who got fresh pennies from the Fed after the Christmas rush. (The box was date stamped 1/1/08)
Should I hit that bank up again, or wait a few weeks?

| I would talk directly to the manager. If you can't get the scoop, go to another bank. I'm taking the advice of the senior members on this board by opening accounts at multiple banks (that way you have a right to purchace those pennies). The tellers at my favorite buying bank actually saved a box that an old man had hand rolled! I thought it was going to be a gold mine, yet the percentages were quite average (25-30%), save for a few more wheats than usual. Good luck! |

One small local bank in my area is a gold mine for copper coins. I found that they get most of their coins from older local people hand rolled with their names and phone numbers on them. The only problem is that they don't have any boxes on hand. I'll have to bag them. |

Very nice. I think I'll keep my eye out for small local banks when I travel to friends' houses that live in the sticks. This hobby just keeps getting better and better! |

That was almost my problem last night. I opened a box and every roll had 5-8 dark cents each & all the rest were BU 2007
I thought about it for a while. Do I return the whole box unwrapped, or open the rolls and take out the dark ones?
It took 5 min to open and 5 min to pull out about 300 dark cents. I didn't take the time to copper sort. I just tossed them in my "waiting to ryedale" bags. |

| I went to that little bank today that I was telling you about. I asked for $25 in pennies. I didn't bring a bag with me but one of the telles went into the backroom and came out with a cloth mint bag. I weighted the load bag and all when I got home and it came out to 16 pounds. Not bad. |

This is one area where a good scale comes in handy. If you suspect that you got zinced you can just weigh the rolls and you never have to open them.. even faster than a Ryedale.
For bags to carry out rolls in I have found that those canvas grocery bags/totes with handles work pretty well. You can put a bunch of rolls or about 3 boxes in one. They are actually quite sturdy. Thye other day I got 251 rolls of pennies and 25 rolls of nickels in one. The bag held up, but it was a little heavy.. about 95 pounds.
Definately a good idea to have accounts at multiple banks so you can get through those spells of zinc at your regular banks. |

| I have an Ohaus Emerald Scale.. very nice and weighs up to 500 grams, but any scale that will weigh up to 150 grams will work. You don't really need a super high end scale. If it is a solid zinc roll it will weigh in at about 126 grams. |
