Yesterday afternoon searching through a CWR of nickels, I had a very wonderful find...a nickel that was a definite upgrade for a spot in my nickel album.

I saw the reverse of the nickel first and knew it wasn't one of the more recent year nickels by the way it looked with the really deep strike but when I carefully turned it over to look at the obverse I was completely shocked to see it was a 1939. Yes, I know this isn't one of the five key dates (perhaps 2009 will become the sixth key date???!!!). BUT, this nickel looks to be in an excellent MS condition, perhaps an MS63 or higher.

Just had to share the news of my good fortune.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.

That's awesome! I found a bunch of BU 1950s and 1960s in a CWR recently, but nothing that high a grade.

CWR are definitely the best way to "strike it rich" - if you happen to get someone else's collection. However the likelihood of that happening is low. Brinks boxes will give you a more steady stream of buffalos and silver.

If you sort as a gamble (like playing the lottery), then CWR are the way to go. But if you sort to complete a collection, or to get silver, then the Brinks boxes seem like the right choice. If you want both, then do both.

Searched: $2230 Nickels; Liberty: 1; Buffalo: 4; War: 20; 2009: 2; 2010D: 8

Way to go; high grade nickels are worth quite a bit, right? Nickels seem to lose their detail so easily. Usually whenever you find nickel older nickels they are pretty well worn.

Do you have any idea on a value?

A CWR is a Customer Wrapped Roll. Usually, they are better than a Brinks roll, or anything that a major coin sorting company puts together. You never know what you might find in a CWR.

PennySaved...it isn't worth much since it isn't a key date. Maybe $3 - $4 but it is a beautiful addition/upgrade in my album and that's what counts!!! Plus add in the excitement/WOW factor of finding it and I would say its value is priceless.

nice find. I think because i'm not searching nickels that often i can't tell a AU and BU apart from lesser qualities nickels. So i just hold by date.

Keep up the finds and posts PTP!

also did that 1939 have a D on the back

Job!!!...thanks! No, it didn't have a D on the back nor an S on the back so it wasn't a key date. Neither did it have the "doubled Monticello" which would have made it exceedingly valuable. When you look at this coin in my album compared to those around it you can immediately see the difference. This coin has high luster, would that be the correct term for being nice and shiny??? I truly thought it was a much newer coin except for the strike as the older ones just look different from the newer ones in that area. I don't know how to explain it, but they seem to have more definition and they don't look as "flat" as the newer years do.

Not valuable monetarily, but truly valuable in the excitement/memories department.

Now, get out there and sort those coins, everyone.

Does it have full steps? It could be worth at least $20-30 in that case.

PTP, I didnt know nickels were like that. I know pennies you can just tell the difference between old bu and new by because they are more full and have more luster. Thats cool that you can tell with nickels which are the same composition

Found one just like that. I bought some change from some co-workers. The guys like to throw their change in all types of containers at their home. I'm slowly getting a few of them to sell it to me rather than going to the bank. Anyway, I was going through a small nickel stash from one of the guys..not too many finds. Then one caught my eye. It just stood out. I was so sure it wasn't old. It was a 1939 too. It was like no way...wow. Just like some early 60's pennies. Full strike...just stands way apart from the rest.

Great Find!

One about 10 minutes from me as well. Untill I had lunch there with Mr. and Mrs. PreservingThePast, I hadn't ate there in a while.

After first week in November, I'll have some more days off. Maybe I'll end up in your area....
