COOL! My goodwill overprices everything, sometims for as much as double what you could buy it in a store. I guess those in charge of pricing are ignorant in the opposite direction of those that priced your sterling necklace. |

Nice find! I picked up a 4.2 gram 14K gold necklace a few weeks back for $1.99. There out there, it never hurts to check! |

Most of the time the silver seems to be priced dead on. But this necklace had a base metal crucifix attached to it. But I could tell just be the heft of the necklace that is was way under priced. Too bad it was not the color of the day and eligible for the 50% discount. |

How did you find that?
How did you weight it?At the store?
How did you know it was 14K?
These may seem like dumb questions, but I'm new to this stuff. |

I bring a small digital scale and a jewelers loupe with me every time I go to the Goodwill. I also have an iPhone with a spreadsheet that can give me an exact metal content value. |

that's funny.
The reason I don't bring those items in because all it will do is breed competition or curiosity. OR they'll just start pricing things up until it is higher than you are willing to pay, then they'll know they didn't 'underprice' it.
At least, that seems like what My local Goodwill would do. |

I ask to see whatever is in the showcase, and just start looking. It helps to take a magnet. I have a nice, powerful one that I busted out of a hard drive and I keep it on my keychain. I did not weigh the piece at the store, but once you do this long enough you can use the "hand scale" and come up with a quick estimate. I do have a digital gram scale at home for weighing jewelry and 1982 pennies I knew it was 14K because it was marked 14K on the clasp - most pieces will be. Look for 10K, 12K, 14K, .925, 92.5 etc. Asking questions is the best way to learn besides getting out there and searching on your own! Good luck with it. I sold $156 worth last week, and my initial investment was maybe 10% of that. |

Got another great deal yesterday.. I grabbed a sterling bracelet that did not have a tag. I asked for a price on it and the lady replied "It's .925... So it will be $6.99". I bought it in a heart beat, I could feel the heft in my hand. Got to the car and put it on my scale. It weighed out to 47.06 grams.. |

It can be fun. You just never know what your going to find there.. Same thing with Yard Sales. My best score at a Yard Sale was a 4 gram 14K necklace for $0.75. |
