Hey all... forgive me of my newbieness...lol I'm sorting my pennies as we speak. Why am I putting aside the 52-82 pennies? Will I eventually be scraping them for the copper value or are they just better/worth more. I have an entire collection of wheatbacks that my father left me and never knew of their significance (could use some insight) GREAT forum by the way and great information. Thanks for the help.

The hope by many of the 'hoarders' and members here is not that you will scrap the cents, but that they will be traded in bag units much as silver coins are today. "Junk copper" if you will.
They may still trade for less than 'melt value', but higher than you could easily get for them at a scrap yard. |

It is not just a hope - but a reality - copper is traded by the bag here and on eBay. 82s can be copper or zinc, so choose a way to separate them. |

When I first started I had to save for my first $25 box of pennies. I sorted and learned, sold and learned some more.
I now have a decent indian wheat and memorial collection, and have built and parlayed with the Lord's guidance and an excellent education by the fine membership here into a good .999 and 90% silver collection, then worked that into being able to produce and offer my own bullion in 1 gram silver and 1 gram gold bars, listed in the Buy It Now section of this website, The Copper Cave, or Steel City Copper (you can google either if your not familiar with them, both members here).
Copper cents have been VERY good to me! When I shake free some capital and have the time and room again, I will again go back to copper because the fundamentals are SO sound.
What other investment has a basement like cents? Gold or silver can be manipulated down to $1 an ounce theoreticly, and you would lose everything. Copper cents are Legally Bound to never be worth less than Face Value! If the "dollar" (FRNs) gain strength your face value gains strength while the tangible drops. If the "dollar" (FRNs) lose strength your tangible side (copper) gains in value against the loss of purchasing power in "face value"!
What a tremendous oppertunity!! I can not think of ANYTHING else available to "the common man" that offers this kind of investment protection.
We are commanded to use wisdom with what the Lord has entrusted to us, and it does not seem wise to me to put money in a bank where it is garaunteed to lose 2-5% "purchasing power" under the BEST conditions to inflation, when copper cents provides protection to our savings from such thievery (let's call it like it is).

The silver [is] mine, and the gold [is] mine, saith the LORD of hosts. Hag 2:8 [/b] He created it. He controls it. He gave it to us for His use. Why did we turn from sound scriptural currency that PROTECTS us?

Kurr, thank you for your insightful post! Even people who sort for a while get tired but then after reading something like this, we remember why we do it. The sound fundamentals, knowing that the common person can do it, and all it takes is a handful of pennies. Makes e think of the beginning of a rags to riches story, now i gotta wipe these tears |

Rambo_k9...welcome to the madness.
Ummmm.......don't mean to knit pick here but, you said 52 - 82 pennies. You want to save all wheat cents which go through 1958, as I am sure you are already aware. Then many on here save the 1959 - 1981 US pennies that have the 95% copper content. Some of 1982 do as well and that is where the Ryedale machine comes in to play for sorting out the copper cents. For those of us that don't do that, then you can always use a small digital scale to weigh your 82s to determine their metal content, if you are so inclined. Some of us are actually known to sort and keep zinc year pennies for various reasons. Whatever you enjoy doing and for whatever the reasons.
As Kurr said, many of us begin sorting for one reason and then it escalates into learning and collecting and before you know it a numismatist could be born, but sounds like you might already be one since you are keeping your dad's wheat collection.
Other members on here have become attached to the Canadian pennies as well and their years differ for the metal content compared to the US. That information can be obtained from prior posts plus the web site coinflation is awesome to use. Of course, Canadian pennies can lead to wanting Canadian nickels and who knows where or when this madness ends.
Seriously, sorting coins is a great hobby, with no downside that I can see.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

Wow.... THANK YOU for the insight and making me feel welcome. Very much appreciated. This is addicting already...lol Only wish I knew about it sooner. I have a nice collection of wheat pennies and am sorting the others as we speak. I'll have a ton of other questions... #1... what do I do with the 95% pennies? Am I storing them for a rainy day, waiting to scrap them or selling them to someone else. Thanks for your patience with my questions. I'm looking forward to learning and gaining with this "hobby". Thanks again. |

I think it is natural for newcomers to learn about the opportunity represented by copper and view it as "a get rich quick scheme." I feel to think that way would be a mistake. If you start getting greedy, you might wind up buying lots of equipment that ties up your capital and the payback isn't immediate. There are alot more sellers than there are buyers on this forum, unless you lower your selling price to a level where you have to ask if you're being adequately compensated for all your labor and time expended. It is much easier to amass copper cents than to sell them. Be patient, enjoy the hobby and try and fill some more slots of your Dad's albums. Let the cents you sort and save build up, and before you know it you might well have a significant amount. Hand sort for now, especially if you're on a limited budget. You don't want to have to liquidate all your coppers for a poor price because of budget concerns. Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum newbie |

Yes, as with anything else use common cents and hoard the copper ones. |

Hi Rambo_k9!
Welcome! I am new here, too. I have read this site for a couple of years before diving into the fun.
So far on this thread, no one has spoken too much about copper futures. The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) all have export economies that feed to Western consumerism. As they continue to sell to us, their own economies grow and an affluent middle class emerges within the BRIC. This new middle class develops it's own consumerism and the masses want all the goodies we causally buy today. Even if our Western economy falters, the BRIC will still grow. It will continue to manufacture to supply goods to it's own people. If this continues to hold true, demand for copper will stay at it's current level or continue to grow, therefore, the intrinsic value of your copper Lincolns will continue to grow.
Sort and hold. At least, that's my two cents worth! |

Just curious, how did you find the site?
Had just been searching around on the web for scrap metal prices and found the site. Great information and the people on here seem very sincere and level headed compared to other forums I've been on. |

It is against Forumco's rules to post in none-English languages here. I love it when I get to say that. |
