You guys scrap/recycle your tin food cans? What do you get for them? called a few places around me and was told 2 cents a pound with them washed and labels removed by one place and everyone else I called said either they don't take them or don't pay for them or didn't answer the phone.

I will clean mine out and throw them in the drums of the washers and dryers I scrap, along with other smaller pieces of scrap.

Same here. I usually don't have very many.

I just set mine on the curb. I've never thought they were worth the effort.

Steel is steel. If you are going to the yard with other stuff then why not keep them!

I rarely mess with steel. Takes up too much space.

I have put an extra couple of grand in my pocket this year from scrapping, and the vast majority of it was from steel (as I am currently hoarding my aluminum/copper/brass/lead). And it really does not take up that much space to accumulate the tin. I have a 16ft bumper pull flatbed, and all my steel/tin is stored (after processing to remove any insulated copper or other metals) on it until the flatbed is full, then it is emptied by hauling to the recycle yard. The cycle then begins anew. But this is also due to the fact that I deal quite a bit in large appliances, so it does not take quite as long to accumulate a full load.

So far this year steel has made up 55% of the cash. But as stated takes up space it is 89% of the weight turned in. It is getting harder to find copper and alum so I decided to go ahead and get the steel while I can. If I had a trailer for my truck I could do more appliances but I take what will fit in the bed of my small Nissan truck! Also when breaking down different items you almost always get some steel.

Yep Steel is steel...I throw the food tins, screws, nails, door knobs, aerosal cans, engine parts, any steel in a drum(steel) then when full dump the drum and contents and start over....Abit on the small scale but I don't like to throw stuff away if it can be recycled. I pollute as much as I can so I try to recycle as much as I can also.

Something you might want to think about is finding one of those trailers that are made out of an old pick up bed. They are not expensive and you would basically double your capacity. I picked one up from a person who called my craigslist ad (hauling scrap for no cost to them). Cost me $50. I can get most of that back (if not all) if I ever decide to scrap it. I am going to use it to also store scrap in until it is filled. I will probably use it to "store" my generic aluminum until I get it filled, then take it in.

Steel is heavy, it's everywhere.

I keep every nanogram, down to the bottlecap.

Scrapping steel has definitely improved my family's quality of life.

I'm getting 5.5 per pound now, and that's fine with me.

I put ads on all the bulletin boards I find, and also watch the free section of craigslist.

I come across some during the course of my job.

Otherwise it's not worth it, making special trips.

I will make a special trip for a large appliance or an ac unit if it is within a 10 mile radius, but futher than that, unless they have a full load for me, I cannot see making a special trip. I did travel about 50 miles one way last weekend, but I got a full load for my 16 ft flatbed, and after I separated it all it included about 50 lbs of stripped copper wire (I stripped it myself) from 600v lines in junction boxes and conduits.

And you got all of that for free? that is pretty sweet
