I'm 59. If I could save up enough to be able to spend annually what I'm earning now... for twenty more years, I would deem that enough of a security net to quit working. How about you?

Hoard now and hold on!

Is that adjusted for inflation? So how do you plan to pay your nursing home bill when you hit age 80?

Beauandros reminds me of the elderly old lady on the antiques roadshow, who just discovered she has a treasure, and I'm yelling at the TV: sell it! sell it now! Insure it and burn your house down!

Sorry Ray, I couldn't resist.

Antiques Roadshow 2015:

"Well, your gold necklace will not fetch a premium, since nobody buys necklaces anymore, but would you be surprised to hear the metal value alone puts it at... $27 million?!?!"

"Good god! That's amazing! That'll buy me enough bread for a month!"

Beauanderos, I'm 20 years behind you age-wise but I don't think anyone can go wrong stocking up on (or in your case, increasing the pace of your stocking up) the proverbial beans, bullets and Band-Aids. Everyone needs these tangibles no matter how old they are. But how many people your age are looking toward retirement with no plans on how they are going to "live" on Social Security and whatever might be left of their pensions? The fact that you're already thinking and planning in this regard puts you miles ahead of others.

The important thing isn't how much any of us have stocked up or saved up, but how much of a common-sense plan we have and how much we can adjust to changing circumstances. I know millionaires who are absolute idiots, and I know people who are scraping poverty level who are sharper than Einstein.

I'm working the financial angles, Chad... you've got the preps. Deal has the guns. Kurr can lead the bible studies. Eric can be a scarecrow for the garden. I really think it wouldn't be a bad idea to form a group of likeminded survivalist precious metals hoarders to set up a compound somewhere where we can all retreat if/when TSHTF like they do in Patriots Could we have a super secret signet ring too?
