I have a confession. I have been using my cute kids to butter-up the bank managers. How can they refuse the lil' guys' requests for 100-200 more free penny roles or a few extra boxes to sort through. I plan on bringing the kids to the potential dump banks to see where I get the best response(s); I mean, my "kids" will be going through a lot of pennies for their innocent hobby, and they'll be dumping off a lot of zinc! As always, I will strategically pick a dumping point that I do not feel will re-introduce the sorted coinage into my area. I am extremely lucky to literally be surrounded by various banks and credit unions. No matter where I go there will be at least three banks along the route. This sorting is a lot of fun, and if worse comes to worse, I'll eventually have a few thousand face in CU pennies, what a horrible thing that would be! p.s. Don't worry, my spoiled kids are handsomely rewarded for their efforts (standing there with sad puppy faces) afterwards at Toys-R-Us.

No kids here, but I do have a young sister, and young cousins....Makes me think a family day to the banks are in order....Use what you have/can get until it is gone. Good learning experience for the kids. What ever works. I like the Toys-R-Us bribe for the hard days work.

Great idea. You use what you have. I know one guy that gives the banks the story that he is helping the kids on one of those million penny projects. Then when he turns in the zinc he says he is cashing in the million pennies for them. I know another guy that always takes his young daughter with him to the bank.. how can they say no to cute kid? You might think about rewarding them with coins also. Get them started collecting with a penny book. My dad did that with me and it has become a lifetime hobby.
At these levels I think I see a Ryedale in your future. You are kind of like those single guys that say they will never get married. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

HoardCopper, you made my morning. I laughed out loud when I read your last comment about marriage and the Ryedale! On a serious note; The penny book is a great idea, as I've already seen my elder son take an interest in key dates, errors, etc. The only problem is he doesn't like the idea of automation at this point, feeling it would take away from our current hands-on, somewhat numismatic approach. I actually like seperating and carding exceptional AU-BU examples of pre-82 and even zinc coinage (and I've even entertained the thought of going through all of my copper to seperate clean CU from dirty . I hope that the lowly penny will get more respect someday. |

I personally think it will.
And why stop at pennies? Why not ask for some halves or dimes, too?
And since you have kids, I think it's great to bring them to the bank and ask for pennies. Tellers do have have a hard time saying no to cuteness! haha. And many children unfortunately are not very familiar with banking and money. You're teaching them important aspects of our culture that are barely taught in school, and it's time spent together, as well. |

I have a 4.5 year old boy - I often take him on penny runs. He likes it and he is learning. At our dump bank I opened up an account in his name. It is called a "Moolah Moolah Account" - when the kid gets to school age, the bank works with the local school system - the kids can do banking at school - only deposits...they take their money to school and "deposit" it with their teachers...it ends up in thier Moolah Moolah accounts. I find the zinc dump bank is more accepting of the idea that me and the boy sorts the pennies....I have him say cute things like " boy, daddy...we sure are going to have a lot of sorting to do tonight....". My father introduced me to banking at about 5 years old....and it has made all the difference in my financial life. I remember in the early 70's when dad tought me abou a C.D. (Certificate of Deposit) - he told me it would tie up my saving for about a year...but would pay 15% (big inflation back then...). It was a great learning experience for me....turned me into a saver...
On an humor note: I now have my little boy telling every one he meets are the bank to "Vote for Ron Paul for President".....he then followes up with "Go to RonPaul2008.com". I think it leaves a lasting impression, when folks are told by a 4.5 year old to check out things they should be doing anyway....
We're kind of crazy around our place...but it is a hoot! |

Mine, too. And he taught me about compound interest, which changed my life forever.

My son also wants Ron Paul to win, unfortunately he is being ignored by mass media, and he'll probably be shot if he gets too far. Look at what happened to JFK weeks before confronting "powers that be." I hope my son gets to grow up in an America that stops treating its own "subjects" (that's right, being a citizen means nothing anymore) as criminals that must constantly be fearful of every step they take. Imagine being arrested and fined for taking a capitalist action - melting pennies for profit. Perhaps the fact that "The Fed" is selling metal at half price shows the level of intellect that we're dealing with Oh well, at least we've got the cute kids to cheer us up! |

Great Idea, My 7 year old daughter is my "partner" in the sorting and everynight is begging to sort pennies so I bought her the 1975 to 2008 book (thinking she can fill it with just the zinks and coppers we are currently handling) and she loves it!
Slows the copper sorting down alot!!!! Now we have to hand sort the copper & THE ZINK!!!!!!!! looking for her dates! I might as well sell the ryedale I have to hand touch them any way! (ok just kidding)
Cant wait to get it filled... But still super proud to see the coin collecter in her!!

cessna, my boy is 5.5 yrs old and sounds like a twin of yours.
I let my boy hand sort the coppers. I pay him a nickel for each wheat he finds and for each penny that fills a void in our books. I do the automation my self. If he's been behaving, I sometimes let him keep the Canadians. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

My boy is 3'and a half' and can make the tightest teller cough up pennies. I have another fresh penny sorter boy that is now 4 weeks old. My 3yr old can find wheats which he calls canadiems and can read dates on all coinage. He has a significant savings account and an education trust fund as well as jugs of copper.

LOL, Ya'll are giving me some positive outlooks here, Since this is a thread on kids, I have 2 children presently. Twins, and a boy and a girl at that!!
I have sinced learned that many many cultures think that twins are a true blessing, and the oriental folks that I have met go NUTS when they find out they are boy/girl twins. People (vendors/shopkeeps/resteraunteers) are always being extra friendly and giving them presents.
That I can teach them to read, do math, read numbers, understand money, and learn history through this hobby is just an added plus and joy to me! Children truly are the greatest blessings. |

| When I take my 6 year old son to the bank, I don't have to pay him. He gets a sucker from the tellers. |
