In searching bank rolled dimes, I found an 1854 seated liberty dime --- on one side. On the other side it is something odd. A very styalized W or M. A wavy pattern around the edge maybe 3/8 inch, then a disc with this strange styalized letter. I will include a picture of front (just a normal 1854 seated liberty dime) and the odd back, later tonight when I can get my 14-year old to take a better picture than I can. I have not put it under magnification, but it looks like the back may be inserted into larger coin, similar to the magician's half dollars I have found. But is it very precise. Both sides look equally worn and tarnished. The liberty on the shield is legible all but the Y. Nothing on the back side appears to be worn away.

It's a LOVE TOKEN...
Love Tokens were made on practically all denominations of coins. During the late 1800's a man earned about 10 cents a day. As a result, most love tokens on U.S. coins were engraved on smaller denomination coins, particularly the Liberty Seated Dime. These silver coins were softer, thus easier to engrave, than cents and nickels. Gold coins were also used but not as frequently, considering the value that a love token on a $1.00 gold coin represented.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

At the time most Love Tokens were artisically carved, they were an everyday common coin. Each of these coins represented a substantial part of a day's wages at that time in the 19th century. A man giving that carved coin as a token of his love to a woman is beyond price. |

I would have preferred finding a more typical 1854 dime in such good condition; however, I am very happy to have this coin, and to have learned a little more about US hsitory. When I find an old coin, I often try to imagine for just a moment what was going on when that coin was new; depression, WWII, WWI, whatever. It is interesting to connect to the psat; these coins have transcended so many gnerations and worries, and loves. Thanks again to Mr. Country for educating me on what this coin was; I read about them on the web last night.
As to dimes in general, in the past 9 months I have found an 1880 in very poor condition, and now this 1854 Love Coin in good condition. I often start to sour on dimes, when I go through so many to find none or just 1 silver. But, it appears that perhaps the oldest finds mignt be hiding in the dime thicket. |

That is so awesome that you found a Love Token!!! Try pricing them next time you are at a coin show, IF anyone even has any for sale. They are becoming so scarce, just as are the Hobo Nickels. A cool part of our history.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

Congrats on the Love Token find! I've been searching "tons" of dimes and a Love Token find has always been on my mind. I used to own one that also had my initials. It would be great to find one in rolls of dimes as you did. |

I could not get a good photo with my son's camera, so I dug out an old digital micro-scope Intel sold 10 years ago as a kid's toy. It doesn't do the coin justice; I can easily see all but the Y in Liberty on the shield, yet here it looks quite worn. It is a dark coin. (by the way, the toy microscope on 10x doesn't make a very good picture, being low resolution of 10 years ago, but at 60x it is very nice to look at mint marks)
so here are the pictures, or at least I hope they are, as I struggle with the steps required to post them. The reverse letter appears to be an M or W ---- perhaps Wolvesdad's great great grandfather. You must be logged in to see this link. You must be logged in to see this link.
