It depends on what you are looking to stock up on, however, for common items I think a trip to walmart or a Sams club membership would prove to be the most economical. |

I've bought several small lots from BulkFoods.com and WaltonFeed.com. BulkFoods has much better shipping rates--$5 flat rate UPS Ground for most orders over $75. I'm dehydrating most of my own storage food and buying bulk rice, beans and spices at Sam's Club (well, whatever beans they have available at Sam's, and the rest at Wally World), but I'm ordering hard-to-dehydrate (mostly high-sugar) items from BulkFoods. I just placed an order for tomato powder and banana chips. They've also got better spice prices than Sam's, so I'll be ordering spices from them soon as well. The banana chips from BulkFoods.com totally rock, by the way:

MOST of your food storage items can be bought locally and prepared more cheaply by you if you have a good food dehydrator (I have 12 Nesco American Harvester dehydrators--yes, 12, you read that right ). And besides cost, one major problem with a lot of prepackaged dehydrated meats and veggies is that you get very few servings for the price and package size, plus the dehydrated meats are usually chock-full of sodium AND expensive. I use extra salt in dehydrating mackerel just to keep the oil in the fish from turning rancid, but I plan to double-cook the mackerel and drain off the salt between cooking periods before I eat it. And I can store a heck of a lot more food per dollar making it at home than I can from buying it, and I know exactly how it's going to taste. Here's four pounds of frozen spinach after dehydration--fits into a one-quart mason jar:

And dehydrated chicken (although I've switched to dehydrating canned mackerel because it's much less oily/greasy than chicken and doesn't have the amount of grease running off and shorting out my dehydrator motor):

And speaking of mackerel, here are cases of canned mackerel waiting to be dehydrated, along with cases of spices along with veggies and meats after dehydration:

Can't forget coffee: (I need to buy more--$3.38 a can at Walmart)

And don't forget to label everything:

Hey Nickelless, that's about 10 days supply of coffee for you, right?
You take canned mackerel and dehydrate it? Why? Increased shelf life?
