This thread by Misteroman got me to thinking...

You must be logged in to see this link.

Those of us who buy PMs on a regular basis don't want to be tagged as PM buyers for obvious security reasons, but what can we do to buy PMs, even in large amounts, without it being obvious to neighbors and others that we've just left the coin dealer with our pockets full of gold?

On the thread above I made the observation that $1,000 face value worth of pre-1965 silver fits (I think) into the same size Priority Mail box as $100 face value worth of copper pennies, and the pre-'65 silver can be ordered in that amount directly from APMEX and shipped directly to your door without anyone having to set foot inside the coin shop and attract unwanted attention. What other PM buying methods could people use to acquire large amounts without attracting attention from neighbors or other unwanted guests?

The (possible) problem with buying through mail is that the post-man has to be thinking "PM HOARDER" when he delivers clinking, heavy, packages ad infinitum.

Point taken, Roadrunner, but you could always open a box at a place like the UPS Store, Mailboxes Etc. or other places where you wouldn't have the packages delivered to your house.

I dont know, lead can be heavy too... And ammo can clink also.

OK, I just e-mailed DMccarty, who works for APMEX. Hopefully we can get some ideas from him.

Do you think an armored car rolling up to your house with your shipment would be conspicuous enough? just kidding

Yeah, probably a bad move. Food for thought:

For most of us, it is about buying in the small scale since that is what we are able to do.

But yeah, I've bought about 6 flat rate boxes of solid coin in the last year and the mail man is like "what is this?"

Well, maybe intentionally, or maybe by accident... but I think it is okay that last month the box of pennies I bought got busted open ALL THE WAY.

The postal worker comes to my door with the flat rate box inside an open bag inside of a larger box. He saw that these were all pennies. It wasn't silver or ammo or anything. But who knows what he was thinking.... "why is this guy getting a whole BOX of pennies! It doesn't make sense." Who knows what he is thinking.

"May your percentages ever increase!"

Many places make it very clear that they will not ship to PO boxes. Also, the big clinking packages are still connected to your face and name when you pick them up, but maybe not as much. There is also the security factor of other people seeing when you're getting your package(s).

Good topic here!

Shipping to a real USPS postoffice box is not a problem. $1000 of 90% shipped weighs about 58 pounds in one flatrate box. Have your box shipped to a USPS postoffice box. If postal employees are interested in what's in the package, tell 'em it's a big box of pennies for your collection.

If you're a multi-millonaire, a 58 pound box could contain 900 ounces of GOLD - $1,116,000 at today's $1240 GOLD spot. How many boxes of these does the average multi-millionaire need?

A billionaire would probably have the Brink's truck deliver 60LB GOLD bars to his/her own depository vault.

A UPS Store address wouldn't be a P.O. box--my uncle has a UPS Store address and it's an actual street address.

The thing I'd like to know is if APMEX and other PM dealers will ship large orders without putting APMEX or whatever in the return address of large orders--just the address instead.

I doubt it. The all use their own boxes and usually require signature delivery. However, most postal employees won't recognize the seller anyway.

that works to an extent. but i don't believe the insurance covers you for a loss that occurs once the flunkies at the mailbox store accept delivery. also, those folks are nosier than the mailman, and they have your physical addresss so you don't gain much.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

I just got an e-mail reply from David McCarty over at APMEX and sent him the link to this thread, so hopefully we'll get a reply from him soon.

Gotta have pretty deep pockets to put $1000 in SILVER in your pockets. However, $1000 in GOLD would only be two or three GOLD coins that would fit in anyones pocket.

I too see silver rising above the yellow metal and taking a leading position.

I have witnessed large purchases from wealthy individuals in local shops. Although, to them 100K purchase was not that significant.

Not $1,000 worth of silver, $1,000 face value. Big difference.

You guys are thinking way to hard. Find a bigger local shop. Have him oreder everything right to his shop. Get a suitcase or something and simple load up and stroll out. When you get to your house unload the suitcase and wheel it to your house. No one will think twice.

Or load up at the local shop and bring it out to your car. Than make several trips with a backback.

Or 1000 other easy ways to do it.

But if people living or working near the local shop see you make several trips, they could find out who you are and find out where you live if they suspect you have PMs.

I used the chat feature on the APMEX site a little while ago and the customer service rep said that a special request could be made to put APMEX's owner's name in the return address instead of putting the company name. That would solve some problems.
