Well after reading about all of ya'lls finds for months, I finally decided to start searching for myself. Opened an account at a local credit union Wednesday and although my first $10 CWR I searched yesterday was a skunk, I think I did pretty good today.
Stopped in at the same branch today and asked for halves. Nothing. But the girl said she'll call the other branch down the road and ask for me. Cool I thought. When she came back and said "there holding $41 for you" I couldn't get out of the door fast enough. So, walk into the new branch, ask for said halves, and the teller brings me a box with $41 worth of loose coins. When I brought 'em home, I scored 3 90% coins! 2 '62 Franklin's and a '43 Walker. Sure there a little wore out, almost slick, but it's silver baby! I'm hooked! Placed my order for a $500 box

Always a thrill! I got a silver quarter out of the tellers tray this week. Worth about $3.50 (threefitty) which still amazes me. Halves have been tough this summer with only 1-3 per box. Every now and then you hit payday. Somehow I managed about what, 800 so far this year? (have to look) Country said I have found the most skunk boxes too.
They are out there. Go get them and report back!
Post some pics now and then for the rest of us to drool over.

I just politely ask if they have any half dollar coins. I told them I'm a collector, and apparently the only one who ever asks for them. Most people who come in ask for the presidential dollar coins  |

Yep, it's that easy.
But,
If you're polite and provide a nice soliloquy about how you need to fill some missing holes in your coin collection (or my favorite, "I need to find a 1975 half to complete my collection.") they might even offer to order boxes for you.
Disposing the drek is another story... |

The first several months I hunted silver coins I found silver halves left and right, but then it was like the bottom dropped out and I was lucky to find a 40% half every 5K or so. Not to mention most of my local banks refused to order any more for me because it costs them money to do that. IF I go out anymore I just ask for loose halves in the drawer or ones that are sitting in the coin machine bag.
Silver dime hunting has been much better for me because I usually don't get skunked, plus the banks are used to seeing dimes much more than halves and they don't mind cashing them in. Of course, I never cashed in at the same bank I bought the box from. One makes enemies quickly that way and you want to keep a friendly relationship with all the tellers you deal with. |
