anyone ever see an Indian Head penny that was once gold plated, and a magnet will pick it up.
it is a 1877.
it looks stainless steel.

my guess was a wrong planchet error?

Whoa, that's odd. More likely it's post-mint tampering. Sorry man. It might be an error though, but probably not.

That old means they may be Nickel-Copper, I think. My grandma had one but I forget the date now.

I wonder why they made the fake out of copper plated steel, when for 2 cents worth of materials they could have made it from copper, and been much less identifyable.
