OK...so I've heard, read and seen mintage figures for 1970 half dollars 40% silver. However I've still yet to actually FIND a 1970 silver half. Also...I have yet to see anyone claim one of their 40%'ers as being a 1970.

So I ask...whats up with 1970's? Do they exist? or am I being taken for a fool?

1970 40% SILVER halves were never intended by the mint for general circulation. They were only available in mint sets and proof sets. A few were spent and ended up in the wild. As an aside, the same is true for 1987 half dollars.

A few 1970 SILVER halves have been reported here on RealCent this year - 1 1970-D in January 2010, 1 1970-D in February 2010, 1 1970-D in March 2010, and 1 1970-D in May 2010. A few 1970-S proofs have been found too in the last two years.

How much is each mintage from 1970 worth?

I would and do save them. You can't be finding that many. I found my first two this week after several months of serious sorting. I save all NIFC's I find. I figure if they weren't intended for circulation they must be or will be worth more than face value.

Last year I found 2 - 1970's (dont know mm right off hand) and probably around 12 or so 1987's. The 87's were grouped in 1-2 bags, like someone dumped what they had been holding onto for a while.

They are very hard to find, but they are out there. In many years of hunting halves, I have only found 4.

I was sifting through my local dealers stock of 40% halves about 4 moths ago and stumbled on a 1970 half. He immidiately said "How'd that get in there". I was able to purchase the coin for $5.00.

I have seen them at shows for anywhere from $15.00 and up!

I am happy to own one!
