I have been reading the forum for the last six months and finally decided to take the plunge. I bought a $110 worth or .01 from my wife's grandfather(so far about 25-30% copper). I picked up a sorter off of eBay for $45 and used a Staples paper case as my collection area (works great) and it didn't cost me anything extra for materials. Thanks for all the info. over the last few months. Going to make my first trip to the bank to pick up some .01 to sort. I appreciate all the info. everyone has posted.

Welcome.Once you take the "plunge" it changes the way you look at things in a good way.Don't expect anyone you try to talk to about it to understand, even though it makes perfect "cents" to all of us here. Go back as far as you can and read all the old posts, lots of mistakes made you can avoid. Have fun with your new hobby, and best of luck in your searches.

My sorter is just the cheapy off of eBay. I got it for $45 with free shipping. Nothing fancy, but it works. I used a Staples paper case box as my base and it is not pretty either, but it works just fine and didn't cost me anything.

I hit the credit union this morning to ease into this and picked up $50 in coin ($10 penny, $20 nickels, $20 dimes)
Results: $10 in penny rolls = 177 copper (two wheats 1947P and 1949S) $20 in nickels rolls = 1 1944S War Nickel (various older dates 39-63) $20 in dime rolls = nothing! |

| Nice score on the nickels! Your copper percentage is a little bit lower than average, but that fluctuates alot. |

| Teller told me that the only rolled coins they have are the ones brought in by customers (the variety of paper rolls varified what she said). I don't think they even counted them as I found a dime in a penny roll. |

Dang lewbo.. you are paying that much? What, are you trying to corner the market? |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

I hear credit unions are best, but not where I live. Find a nice place with a free coin counter in the lobby, or that is willing to accept loose coin.
I have one spot that will accept 300.00 face value, then I reload the wheeled cart and take another 300.00 across the street. In both places I get to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while they run it, then cash me out. Another branch I consider a "top off" branch and only dump 100.00 or less per week, it much closer than the other two.
Don't get too excited and push it. Banks are like individuals and you have to treat them as such. Just cause there in the same family don't mean they have the same personality. I took 1600.00 to one branch in a weeks time, over a year ago and I still can't take coin in there to the machine in the lobby.
Don't accept a "fee" look for another branch. Don't use coinstar, it's expensive and slow.

Thanks!
Hit the credit union again just for $30 today (just feeling out the waters still). $10 in cents and $20 in nickels.
221 in copper ( 4 wheats in the 40's) 12 in nickels (no war dates, but 12 ranging in date from 1947-1963)
My local credit union branch does not have a coin sorter, but a branch about 25 miles aways does and no fees. I am going to make a run over and dump about $80-$100 and see how it goes.
Again, thanks for all the great advice and pointers! |

I went and checked out a new branch of my credit union today. All they had was $8 rolled. I went ahead and took it. I asked about ordering and they told me all they get is what the customers bring in and they cannot order.
Here was my find.
2 wheats 16 2009's (3 Lp1's, 2 Lp2's, 6 Lp3's, 5 Lp4's) 3 2010 shields 171 coppers
