Not sure if everyone who dumps at TD Bank (Commerce) in their Penny Arcade, but they're robbing up blind! I counted and recounted $76.50 in halves last week. I stopped by the local TD to dump them and cash out while my girlfriend made a deposit.
I've used the Penny Arcade for years, mostly for pennies which I rarely counted out before dumping. Just had a "good idea" of how many Zincolns I was dumping. This time, with the halves, I knew the exact amount. When I got the receipt, it said I only dumped $62.73! $61 was in halves and the rest was other coins that I knew dang right well I hadn't dumped.
Ok, so the machine counted some coins for me that it missed for the person before me. It happens, but to take from me $15 in halves? WTH?!
The one teller came over and asked if everything went ok. I was a bit stunned by the missing $$. I told her, no and that the machine ate $15. I told her that I what I had dumped and it was even written on the box. She apologized and gave me $15, even though I figured out exactly how much I was owed. She said it happens from time to time.
I went home, googled TD/Commerce's Penny Arcade and found out it happened quite often. There was even an article a few months ago about it in a local paper, how the coin counters are not at all accurate.
So, it seems these "FREE" coin counters are not free at all. They take a undisclosed percentage to cover any costs TD/Commerce has to pay for rental, servicing, etc. I wished that they'd be upfront about it. I'm thinking of hitting the Coinstar across the street next time. It's a bit more open and honest about the fees.

| I would buy yourself one box of pennies, sort out all the coppers and make sure you know exactly how many you took out. Do some math, dump it, and see how far off the machine is. Then I'd file a complaint with the bank, showing them your figures. |

I remember reading the article on Coinflation. I think there was a discussion here about it also.
I would do something similar to what Corsair says. Just dump pennies there and hope for the lag.. pocket the profits. |

Get a box from the bank. Immedeatly go and open the rolls directly into the machine. The discrepancy will be immedeatly noticed. Yes you'll loose a few oppers this way but you will get your point across. Either the the bank's machine is off, or the bank is claiming that Brinks/Loomis or who ever is supplying them is sending out short boxes. I bet it not the coin service....

Actually, those coin service rolls are sometimes short a coin.. but they are usually close. I trust my machines more than theirs. So you could break them out of the rolls.. keep the coppers.. count out 2000 zincs using your own coin counter. Verify the count several times by running it though 3 or 4 of your high speed counting machines. Then go down and run them through the penny arcade to assess accuracy. |

I stopped using the TD machines for this exact reason. I'm surprised that the teller just gave you the $15 dollars. I was $7 short one day and told I could file a complaint. Then she jiggled the machine and I got $6 of the $7 back. I decided that for $1 it was not worth filling out paper work.
One thing that I will say is that if you stick your finger in the coin return you will be pleased as to how much of other peoples $$$ you will find. I'd say overall that my dad and I are probably up $40-50 in "found" change. |

I got shorted by one of their machines about 6 months ago. Only a couple dollars, P*ssd me off though, but what can you do, the evidence has been conveniently devoured by the machine.
Worst of all, they market this at little kids, B*stards!

Looks like hoard is a little slow on the draw there!
Kinda sucks that this is happening to you. When I send off bags I weigh them to 27-28 pounds and always get over $50 credited to my account. But I watck it like a hawk though. |

I remember this awhile back in the Philadelphia area.A newspaper writer took in known amounts several times and proved it. Basically after speaking with management the bank agreed to give credit to anyone who pushed the matter. Hard to beleive their counters could be off by so much.If a lag in the machine excists or if you can shake some coins free then you could come out a bit ahead.Save some foriegn or nasty coins to toss in last. |

I dump at one TD branch in Delaware consistently several times a month. I weigh my coin before I go, after separating it by denomination (any machine will take dimes as pennies!), and usually dump $50-80 worth of pennies. I have been within a dollar of the correct value every time, and am usually over by some small amount. I have also dumped halves with 0 problems, other than filling the bag over and over again.
I will say that due diligence is needed when dumping coins at any bank. The machines can be inaccurate, tellers impatient, and your coins could be cold and mess the machine up. Weigh your coins, count them, do something so you have an accurate idea of the amount. If you do not like the results do not dump there again. Oh, and be happy that you still have coin counters available because one day soon (relatively) they will be gone gone gone. |

| Not TD, but I had an issue at a branch of my Credit Union. I think it was atypical for that machine though, as the teller who was doing the transaction defended me to the Head Teller. They returned what I figured I was short. |
Are you throwing that out? |

I never dump halves at TD, I have tried and came up short every time without fail. My experience is that they're 99% accurate around me most of the time with other coins. I know what I expect and I usually get it. A couple of times I've complained about shortages when I saw them and when they opened the machine, the reject chute was filled to the brim and spit out my missing coin plus some when hand cleaned. Usually something is jammed in the machine (plastic penny or something) and causes that, when they clear it it gets better. So if you see you're significantly short, complain right away and ask the to check the machine. |
