Actually, some are silver, some are pure nickel. The only way you can tell for sure is to put a magnet up to it. Nickel coins will stick.

Is it possible to find out who found this proof quarter? I got around to tidying up the proof tracking thread here:
You must be logged in to see this link.
The intent of that thread is to track every denomination EXCEPT halves, since that is done very well in this very thread, and because there are nearly 600 proof halves found, versus only a handful of all the others... at least only a handful reported so far. So anyway, go check it out.

The 90% SILVER statehood quarter was an Iowa quarter found by Dumpster Diver on 2/14/10.

You must be logged in to see this link.

There have been some proof nickels and dimes reported in threads here this year, but I did not keep track of who or when for these clad proofs. With some work, you could probably dig these out of the posts.

I was just thinking that. Thanks for finding the one quarter. I will do a search for the word 'proof' in each of the month's threads. Thanks!

You're correct.

In 1967, Canada minted an 80% and 50% SILVER coins. There is virtually no way to tell them apart. In 1968, Canada minted a 99.9% nickel dime and a 50% SILVER dime. You can tell these by a magnet, but you can also tell these apart by weighing them - nickel 1968 dime weighs in at 2.07g and the 50% dime weighs in at 2.33g.

$500 box of halves...

1 - 40%

This box was $5 short with several rolls that appeared to have been picked open and coins removed from the end.

Getting another box tomorrow. Hope for better.

On second thought, there are nearly 100 pages of posts in the six monthly half dollar threads. That's a bit more than I have time to go through right now... soooooo... If anyone wants to let me know what proofs they've found, I'd love to hear from you over at You must be logged in to see this link.
