So I would like to get into the personal bullion production hobby. I have a fair amount of sterling scrap and a few ounces of yellow dental gold 14-19k. I do have experience in gold casting. Ie…melting in a crucible via torch, broken arm centrifuge casting, burnout ovens, pickling, lost wax, and so on. Matter of fact I am/was pretty darn good at it; doing my own work and often other classmates work. However I have not done it since I had access to these things (the school facilities).
I am now looking to get back into it a little. This time around I would like to be able to produce ingots from sterling, coin silver, and maybe some copper. My questions are as follows:
What would be a good furnace (electric) that you may recommend; 5-30 ounce capacity?
I have melted coin silver is sterling much different?
What supplies, flux, molds, ext, would you recommend?
Any ideas or considerations worth mentioning? Any books or websites I need to check out?
Remember this is going to be a hobby. I would like to get started for less than a grand and be able to produce some nice looking ingots for the hungry safe. Thanks guys, Rodebaugh

Uh, you should just call me:

Why spend the extra money on all of the equipment when you can just as easily send it to me and you can get what you want for a fraction of the cost of doing it yourself? |

| Market Harmony does a great job! He had made lots of silver ingots for me and helped me get my own logo stamp too! |

| Not much market for coin silver and sterling silver bars. Melting perfectly good government coins into unknown silver bars is going the wrong direction on the value chain (unless you are refining to pure). |

| If you can find .999 fine silver shot for at or below spot (which shouldn't be TOO hard) I think it would be nice. Just make sure you can get enough to balance out that initial investment. The way I see it, as long as you are a trusted member of your community (if you are hoarding for SHTF-type reasons) bartering with your silver should not be a problem. Also, I am sure some here will be willing to buy some of your bars. |
