| Dose anybody have a different way of opening paper wraped rolls? I still use a wallboard knife and remove the two crimped ends and then unroll the paper. This way is ok, but I'm looking for a different(better?) way. I'm starting to get finger lock after long sessions of sorting. Would be nice to have a machine for this purpose, but funds are low in the winter. |

I open all my rolls by "hand" and faster than a Ryedale can sort them. I actually have to slow down so it can catch up.
Plastic wrapped rolls require no tools and open the fastest. Just make a small tear at one end and squeeze.
For any paper rolls with a machine crimp at one or both ends (so including some hand wrapped rolls), I use a utility knife with a hooked carpet blade. All you have to do is slip the hook of the blade under the crimp and make a small tear through it. After that, they easily rip open by hand starting at the small tear.
Hand wrapped paper rolls with no machine crimps are the slowest for me. I unfold one-end just far enough to get a grip on a single ply of the paper and then they are toast....rip!
I did experiment with a "free" faster way to unroll pennies, but since I am already unrolling at the speed of sorting there is not much point to to unroll faster and get way ahead. But incase anybody is interested: I took an old computer case and cut it up with tin snips. I made cuts in the sheet of metal so that it would sit in the middle, hanging by the rim, of a 5 gallon bucket. The sheet metal from the case was sturding enough to take a beating and sharp enough to open rolls, but dull enough to avoid injury.
The technique was simple. Grasp the roll at one end and whack the other end against the dull blade hanging over the bucket. Depending on the force applied the results could be a neat pile of pennies in the bottom of a bucket or a spray of pennies flying everywhere. |

Extracting the pennies is one of the most time consuming parts of the operation. The best machine for it is called the RollCracker1000. It will open 100 rolls per minute and has vacuums set up to suck up all the paper and plastic wrappers. I don't think Santa is going to be bringing me one of these for Xmas.. I haven't been good enough, and I am told at home that I already have too many machines. This morning she asked why I needed 2 automatic rolling machines.. "So I can roll twice as fast" I answered. Anyway, most of us (even me) don't do enough volume to justify the the purchase of a $15,000 machine that weighs three quarters of a ton, no matter how cool it would be to have one.
The way I open paper rolls is similar to horgad's method, but there is no sheet metal involved. For my bucket I use a kitty litter bucket and whack the coins on the inside corner to break them open. This works pretty well. I even open the hand rolled ones this way because it is faster. Also, you can just set your bucket up in front of the couch and liberate a bunch of pennies while watching TV. Don't fill the bucket all the way up.. 18,000 pennies is more than you probably want to try to lift at one time when you get ready to take them to feed that Ryedale monster. |

| I, like HCBTT, whack to rolls together to loosen them so I can twist them off. The hand-wrapped rolls I save for reroll zincs. The only rolls I discard are the ones from sealed boxes (both plastic and paper). The plastic ones could be reused, but it is too much work to melt the edges to avoid coin lost. |

Report for last 7 days (based on on a guess of 27%):
29 boxes sorted ~19,575 coppers kept including 268 wheats including 1 1943 1 1919 3 1918s 2 1917s 2 1914s
No exact counts anymore on the coppers and zincs as I ratchet things up but I am tracking number of boxes, box weights, and wheats.

| I have been trying HCBTT's method and I'd say it's more fun to smash the rolls than getting hand cramps. My first few rolls ended up splattering around the room, but after a while I did get the "feel" of the job and got the rolls to break open cleanly into the bucket. |

Glad I could help. This forum is all about sharing ideas and experiences. I originally got the idea of using kitty litter buckets for storage from a post by another member here. Then one day I realized those buckets were sturdy enough to smash the rolls on.. thus saving the edge of my desk and keeping pennies from flying everywhere. Smashing them open is kind of fun, plus it is a good stress reliever. |

Well I am pretty sure that I can open rolls faster than you or any of your Ryedale kin can sort them. However, opening rolls faster than a Coin Artist sorts is a different story. |

Haven't gotten shorted on any of my orders out here in CA yet. So if there is a penny shortage, just like free self service coin counters at the banks, it hasn't spread to my area yet. Interesting thing about today's pickup. Picked up 12 boxes ($300) at this one bank that I occasionally get some at and being curious as always I popped a few boxes open in the trunk of the car.. You guessed it.. mostly shiny ones! But as I looked closer I noticed they were not 2007 solid boxes but 2006! I haven't gotten any of those since about February. Does this mean I am finally getting to the back of this bank's central vault or are we finally starting to run them out of pennies? Will have to see what turns up in tomorrow's weekly order when I pick it up.
A Box of pennies is like a box of chocolates.. you never know what you'll get inside.
If we do have a penny shortage I think I am ready. When they start paying a premium for zinc rolls I think I may be able to scare up a few. |

Sorted $7.29 Customer Coins.
A guy bypassed the bank and gave me the coins directly in a jar. He said I could pay him later for the total pennies. I picked up 3 Brinks boxes today for the weekend sorting.

"Haven't gotten shorted on any of my orders out here in CA yet."
I got shorted yesterday at two banks. One had sold part of my penny order to the mall because of the Christmas rush and the other one had been robbed. No the robbers didn't steal the pennies , but the theft and subsequent investigation is delaying their Brinks delivery. |

You will have to make an extra pickup when that Brinks delivery finally comes in. I don't feel too sorry for you though.. I think you have enough pennies stacked up to get you through Christmas. |

Well I got skunked on my weekly pickup today. No penny shortage.. they just told me they forgot to order my pennies, the guy that orders the coins is on vacation, etc. You would think a weekly order would be hard to forget. Gosh, I don't know if I will have enough pennies to get me through Christmas now.
On a good note I was able to buy a bunch of US silver coins, some Red Seal $2's, and some old Mexico coins and paper money from one of the tellers at one of my other banks. Some of the Mexican coins are from the 20's so they might actually have some silver in them. |

I am new to the forum and am wondering what make you choose boxes of rolled coin?
In my area most banks count any loose coin brought in, into $50 bags to sell to brinks.
I have been purchasing those bags prior to brinks thus no coin rolls to open.

| PennyProspector.. welcome to the forum. Most of us will take pennies in whatever form we can get them. If I could choose I would take them in bags like you.. eliminating the coin extraction step would cut down on my processing time. Unfortuntely the banks in my area don't process their own coins.. they have it done by a coin service so the only way I can get coins from them is either in a box or sometimes individual rolls. What area are you from and what has your copper percentage been running? |

From Northern Indiana, copper percentage usually is around 30% + or -, however this week my percentage are super high! (I suspect since I am buying bags brought into the bank by customers I am the receipient of people cashing in the old coin jugs in the closet for Chrismas money)
