Won't know until I pick up next weeks order which will be on Monday. It is kind of like if you get a traffic ticket for not making a complete stop or making an illegal turn and you know you didn't but if you go to court you know who the judge is going to believe. If I go to the bank manager who is he or she going to believe? Me or his head teller? I think the best I can hope for is that they split the hundred bucks with me and we each pay $50.00 which is what I am going to suggest. But I am not expecting them to go along with that. I really can't put up too much of a fuss because it is so hard to get banks in this area to order halves. And I will be leaving the bank with a printed receipt for the cash coming in and coins going out. Hopefully others will learn from this and especially when picking up halves where there can be several thousand dollars involved to always get a receipt.

Don't like to idea of counting the # of currency notes? I think that either makes or breaks your case...

I don't have a problem with counting the number of notes I laid on the counter. I know I laid out the correct amount because when I got home I had the exact amount of cash I should have had. And if for some unforeseeable reason I really did not give them enough cash, that can be proven I don't have any problem making it right with them.

“I think PSI has a pretty good point...” I agree, but try explaining that to the teller the next time your interested in ordering coin.
$100 USD, ouch! “If you are doing a pickup worth several thousand dollars it isn't a bad idea to get receipts so you have a paper trail to verify that you gave them the cash.” Thanks for the advice. I will take it to heart.

You are in between a rock and a hard place.

Look at the $100, divide it by how many boxes you have ordered from the start of your half sorting operations, and consider it an amortized "box fee" if you want to have the best chance of keeping the relationship with them.

If I wanted to keep banking there, but wanted to handle things as fairly as possible, I would go see the manager.

Express the understanding that a mistake was made somewhere, and you know you provided the correct amount and the transaction was completed by the teller as though there were no issues, which (may) legally absolve you from any liability to the bank (check your state laws).

You understand that there could have been any number of reasons why the drawer came up short, including but not limited to machine error, malfeasance, or even intentional activity, and nobody, including you, can say for 100% certain what exactly occurred.

However, you are, as a gesture of good will, willing to defer a part of the loss from the banks mistake, regardless of what actually occurred, with the explicit understanding that your current banking relationship, including the ability to order "X" amount of halves, "Y" amount of pennies, etc. will continue, unchanged.

Express that you are glad that the bank values its relationships with its customers and that this small matter will not interfere with that relationship.

However, there is a better than average chance that you'll get cut off despite giving them money or not. Banks don't like any hassle that does not generate revenue.

As far as treats go, I would not cut them off. Scale it back a bit so it is not an expectation, maybe once every other week.

I tend to be real careful, even with the tellers I am friendly with.

I always use large bills and count them out in front of the teller, and ask "please make sure that is correct."

I don't trust the machines...

When receiving cash, I always count a large sum of cash myself before walking away from the teller window if the teller does not count it out in front of me.

It's Half Time...all the time.

I agree with what you say Justsayno, I have had pretty good luck finding silver from this bank. That is one reason I don't want to end the relationship. And it is so hard to find a bank that wants to order halves. I have them trained pretty well when I come in they have the halves and what ever pennies they have stacked on their cart ready for me to wheel it out to the car. So I am going to suggest we split the missing hundred dollars, but if they don't go along with that I will pay it and then ask them to double next weeks order. And as I have said before from now on when I leave the bank I will have printed receipt in hand to show cash coming in and coins going out.

I never thought of this until now... but... perhaps this is their way of getting YOU to sever your relationship and cut the order off. "He won't pay us $100, and I bet he doesn't come in and order anything, haha."
Just thinking. I've been wrong before. But...
Anyway, there are a good number of us, I'd bet, that want to know what comes of this... I know I'll be waiting to find out what happens.

That's a possibility uthminsta. Maybe they don't want me ordering anymore, maybe the hundred dollars went into the Christmas party fund. If that is the case their plan backfired on them because I am going to tell them I want to double my order from now on because I will have to sort more to get my hundred dollars back.

Well it went the I expected. The teller showed me the receipt from last week that showed the total being off by $100.00 She is sure it was from my transaction. So I reluctantly gave her the extra hundred. And she knew I wasn't a happy camper. But I doubled my order for next week and told her I would continue at this level. So if I average even one 90%er and two 40%ers per box I will have the hundred back in a month. Who knows maybe the silver santa will have pity on me and I'll get one those monster boxes you talk about. And YES I DID LEAVE THE BANK WITH A PRINTED RECEIPT IN HAND!!!

Dont all banks have cameras installed watching tellers and transactions? Couldnt the manager just review the tape and see what occurred? I mean, I cant say for sure, but considering that banks handle massive amounts of $$$ I would guess that there are videos of every single transaction that could be easily watched.

I know you have already paid for it, but this is the first thing I would have asked the bank.

I asked that right away Jwray. I was told the camera only shows the counter where the customer stands from a distance. And it is a time lapse camera that takes like 1 picture every second. So it would show me counting out the bills but really wouldn't show if I was counting 10'S or 100 dollar bills. The cameras are more for if they get robbed than to show each transaction. I don't know if I believe that story either but at least I was able to double my order so hopefully it won't take long to get my hundred bucks back.

I hope they don't cut you off due to the higher volume.

The armored carrier may whine about the extra weight (approx 224 lbs. for 4K if I remember right) and talk with the manager.

Good point Justsayno, I thought about that. I hope that doesn't happen. 8 boxes stacked up really doesn't take up all that much more space than 4 boxes does, same amount of floor space, just stacked a little higher. Hopefully if they have any problems with getting me 8 boxes they will just cut me back to 4 boxes rather than cutting me off altogether.

I would not have paid.

There is no excuse for not counting $2000.00 by hand.

I, like you, count several times before giving cash.

Also, I see tellers who use the machines also hand count, then use the machine twice.

I do see your delema, but also that you gave them $100 for someone elses mistake.

Tough call.
