I believe you are not allowed to bring more than $5 in coinage out of the USA and was wondering if this is just for spacific coins ie. silver quarters or copper pennies (coins worth more then FV) or does it include all coins. Can I bring a 1oz gold coin if it says $50 on it?

I have never heard of this, but I have brought more than $5 in coinage out of the USA on many occasions both driving into canada and flying into Europe and never had any problems whatsoever... Where did you hear this rule? I brought eagle coins with higher than $10 FV every time I travel... brought US 90% into canada... never tried to bring a hoard of copper pennies outside of the states though...

I'm not sure what the specific border rules are, but the melt ban prohibits sending more than $100 in pennies or nickels out of the country.

Well, from personaly experience I can tell you this. The $50 eagle is legal tender for just that $50. You can carry $10,000 out of the country. I've gone thru Customs here and in the Philippines with up to 2 Tubes of Eagles - have been asked a few questions, but haven't been hassled much. What might happen in other countries I have no idea.

Wow, looks like state quarters aren't currency but "numismatic items" as well!! |

In the past when crossing the borders I have had far more than $5.00 in change in my ashtray alone. I can't ever remember being asked while crossing the border about how much change I was carrying. If you have a few passengers in the car and everyone had change you might have a good amount that was being taken back and forth.

I've never been asked about change. Remember that the Canadians could care less about you exporting US pennies and you don't talk to the Americans on the way out. That said, I always obey the law, regardless how dumb it is, and refrain from taking US pennies and nicks North. I read above a suggestion that there is a limit to the amount of Canadian change you can take into Canada - there is no limit except the capacity of your truck - just declare if you are over $10,000.

"Specifically, the new regulations prohibit, with certain exceptions, the melting or treatment of all one-cent and 5-cent coins. The regulations also prohibit the unlicensed exportation of these coins, except that travelers may take up to $5 in these coins out of the country, and individuals may ship up to $100 in these coins out of the country in any one shipment for legitimate coinage and numismatic purposes."

I think the $5 rule only applies for pennies and nickels. You can carry as much other change as you want. That is my understanding of it.
