Judging from store offerings, it seems that linoleum may be considered out of style. There are only a few choices at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Or maybe they just want to sell something more expensive. But I consider linoleum a good practical covering that is easy to maintain. Anyone know a national chain of stores that carries a wider variety of linoleum to choose from?

That's not a dollar, mate...THIS is a dollar.

Are you talking about using linoleum as just a floor covering, Billo? I've never particularly thought of linoleum as an item to stock up on.

Ha ha, yeah I understand your puzzlement. :) Yes, I have kitchen with existing thin all-purpose carpet that should eventually be converted to a more practical covering. Hoping to find more selection so we can choose something that matches better. Few styles at most places.

Not necessarily something to stock up, although you know, a bit might not hurt! Might be hard to find when you needed some, if a floor covering eventually became tacky and you needed to change it. However, getting any known problem spots such as my kitchen changed before any sort of bad scenario or hard times would be much better than after.

Another thought: lots of other things would make problems sooner, but floor covering is a long term consideration. With no electricity, no vacuum. Dust will collect in carpets in living room, bed rooms, etc. This will be felt by those with allergy/asthma within a few weeks. Within a few years, surely even normal people would be feeling pretty dusty too! Something sweepable would be much more practical for the survivalist, such as hardwood or linoleum, although linoleum might seem weird taste outside of kitchen and bath.

HOWEVER, I happen to like the existing carpet in my living room and bed room! And can't afford to replace it now anyway. Might try to stock up some kind of manual floor cleaner, but conversion is something to think about and weigh. But the kitchen...gonna do it soon!

You've got some good points, Billo, and now that I think about it, in a grid-down situation, it might not be possible to vacuum carpet, so linoleum would be more user-friendly in such cases.
