Now that there as been a ban on melting US pennies for copper what are you doing with all of your pre 82's? Also what about canadian coins I have about 50 rolls and was wondering if its legal to melt them in the US for their copper content.

The US copper cents are bought and sold unmelted. It is legal to melt canadian coins in Kentucky.. but they trade unmelted as well.

Thanks. Is that a federal issue or a state on the melting of foreign currency. I know you can still melt down silver coins? |

Why melt them anyway? Nice small, easily recognized, units of copper that will one day be the currency of choice for small transactions again. |

It is federal. You can melt Canadian coins in the US. And you can melt US coins in Canada. But it is not worth the trouble to melt. It is dangerous. The melting point of copper is very high. Why convert rounds of known weight and fineness to a chunk of copper that might require expensive assaying to prove the copper content? |

That I thought melting CAN coins in the US is legal. I've got boxes and boxes of coins like that. plus I've been scraping all my gold and silver since I'm trying to buy a house |

Do you mean physically melting them yourself? Which is a really bad idea for reasons already mentioned, and then some. Or do you mean to sell them as scrap, knowing they will get melted?

I was gonna sell them to the scrap yard. I don't think my stove will reach proper melting temps plus I'm taking a trip to Canada soon and was thinking about picking up a few boxes of pennies, nickels, and half dollars. |

Might have a hard time getting those half dollars. I don't think your stove will reach the proper melting temp either.. lol. Scrap yards are still kind of leary about buying foreign coinage for melt. You would probably do better just selling them intact to another member here. |

yeah half dollars are very scarce in canada so I hope I'll find some silver ones when I order boxes from the bank. I have a friend that is a lawyer so I'll have him write me up a letter saying its ok after he double checks the laws. Like a death certificate for the coins . But I prob will try the for sale forms to see if they can be saved first. |

You can probably sell the Canadian coppers here for more than the scrap yard would give you anyway. |

Uh oh.... What are the odds of having two people from the same city on this forum? I am from Owensboro too! I tried to PM you Nickelless, but it said I haven't made enough posts.
We should get together so we don't sort through each others leftovers at the local banks. This is a small town and if we can divide and conquer, it may save us both some headaches. BTW, I only sort pennies and halves. |

Impossible. Silver halves are a different size than "regular", modern nickel halves (think Ike dollars). You cannot silver sort halves in Canada. |

Welcome to the forum, Webvideopro! I'm actually only in Owensboro on the weekends at this point, going down to see my fiancee, and I'm not doing any major coin sorting at this point (just buying bags of nickels) because of my crazy work and travel schedule, so you're probably not going to get any of my dumps. Incidentally, we had another member on here from Owensboro, Gr33nday43, but he's not coming around much anymore.
Incidentally, one of the banks in Owensboro I used to pick up pennies from when I was sorting pennies is the Old National on Southtown Boulevard. I was pretty amused when I noticed that the cross-street at the bank is Nicholas Drive! |

Hey Nickelles, thanks for the reply. I am a bit stunned that Owensboro is represented on this board. I keep everything I am doing very private, but it would be good at some point to connect with like minded people.
Good luck sorting and enjoy the BBQ festival, it is just around the corner... |
