I've been hand sorting pennies for sometime. I just started buying boxes of nickels today. I work in an office. I'm the new guy around. Most of my co-workers have been there for 3 to 7 years.
I noticed quite a few of my coworkers having a load of pennies sitting on their desks. It seems they clean out their pockets and wallets and keep the "worthless junk" on their desk. I asked one woman if I could check out her pennies and take out ones I wanted. She asked why and I covered by telling her I was looking for the 1909 cent because it's worth "a thousand dollars". She laughed, gave me her hoard and said if I find a good one that she'll split the profits with me. I then told her I like old pennies... anything before 1980. No explanation given. None required.
From her stash, I got about 250 coppers. I emailed her, thanked her and said I'll give her $3.00 for them. She agreed. The woman next to her got jealous because I didn't ask to go through her pennies. So, today during some downtime I asked for hers. She said that she better hear me yell if I find a "$1000 penny".
I went through half of her hoard and so far came away with 200 coppers. All this for nothing. It keeps me busy when things are slow. My boss things I'm funny with my pennies. I don't have to lug 20 lbs of pennies to the bank to dump... I just hand back the zincs and take home the coppers.
Have I just thought up the greatest, laziest way to sort pennies?!
I offer a service for my coworkers. Since I go to the banks all the time.. and I own several high speed sorting and counting machines.. I offer to convert all their loose change into folding money. They love it! They bring in their water jugs of coins from home. I find an occasional silver.. and lots of copper!
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
