This AM I was sorting pennies and found a 1943 Steel penny; I haven't found one of these for a couple of years. It was in a customer wrapped roll. It suprises me that someone wouldn't notice a steel penny when they are rolling coins.

Do you think steel pennies are harder to run across that Indian heads?

I would say yes if you look at the total mintages of IH vs 43 but the steels were toss away and they didn't hold up well.

No I have found 16 steel in my sorting days and still not one of these mystical Indian Head coins in which you speak of. Most of mine don,t look steel though they are brown and crudy looking.

Sorted like 3K in the last 3 weeks.

8 IH's, and 3 Steelies.

The only way I found the steels was because of the magnet on the coin counter.

What's in it for the dude?

I think the steelies are scarcer than Indians... I've found 9 so far but only one steelie in close to 1,000,000 searched. Conga rats on your find

Hoard now and hold on!

Live in Saskatchewan, Canada about 70 miles north of the Montana border. Two weeks ago, my wife trying to humour my copper affliction, stopped at a bank where we don't do business and asked if they had any extra rolls of pennies. They had 30 for her. Turns out the youngest penny in the rolls was 1976 so they were 100% copper. Present were almost 10% US pennies including 36 wheaties and yes, 1 1943 steel penny that is still quite shiny!

I got on of those steel penneys from my sons change last week end. He only takes out the loonies & twoonies & the odd quarter. Anything smaller he says just take it. He gets it in his change from the fast food places he visits with his friends. I left him $1.25 as he had 20 copper penneys, 1 steel US penny ,999 nickel nickel, a US nickel & dime, some comemorative Cdn dimes & quarters.

Happy hunting

Nice. Yes. Very nice.
