In my work, I have to x-ray some of my castings and have a bunch of old x-ray films cluttering up my office. I know that there is silver in these films, does anyone know of a place that buys x-ray film to recover the silver?

Hi Folks!!!!!!!....look,my english is not good enough so please,be gentle with me.
You can recover that silver just preparing a 5% (in weight) solution of oxalic acid with water,I mean,to 950 ml of water add 50 gr of oxalic acid, stir well until the white powder dissolves then heat this solution to 95 C and the add you X ray films, maintain the temperature at 95 C and in 20 minutes the films will be completely clean.Stop heating, let settle down for a couple of minutes, rinse the films and put them off, pour off the liquid, dry the black mud and melt it...you will get 0.999 silver.
I hope it helps.
Kindest Regards from Mexico.

Thanks,Nickelless and Cupronickel.
Yes,Sir,cyanide will clean those black films but cyanide is more expensive than oxalic acid, furthermore handling cyanide represents a hard work and cyanide wastes need treatment.
Other processes for X ray film are sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride and nitric acid.I prefer oxalic acid process because it is the only process which yields to pure silver directly.
Kindest regards

Save it up and find a refiner. If you google "recycling x-rays" you get a couple companies that buy used film.
Depending on how much you have will determine if they buy it directly from you or send it to one of their collection facilities.
Last time I did it I got 75 cents a pound and it adds up quick. It's well worth saving.
Cheers. |
Take this job and shove it. I don't want to work here no more... |
