I'm a bit excited after my trip to the bank(s) on Monday. I stopped in at this one bank while doing drive by's and noticed an ederly woman in front of me cashing in some change. I went up to the teller and requested to recieve everything she just turned in, so she began to question me. I normally dislike this but she proceeded to tell me she had some funny looking quarters in her drawer if I wanted them. At this point she had my interest, so I took a look and sure enough she had 18 silver quarters there. She then said I have around a roll and a half of the weird looking dimes as well. "Oh really, well let me take a took", I said. They ended up being a partial mercury dime set that an ederly woman had brought in. She must have punched them strait out of her husbands whitman album or somthing. There was no 1916-d, 21-p, 21-d but I cringe at the fact that some of these were mixed with her regular dimes already :( Anyways I also picked out a 40% half out of her drawer just before leaving with my silver score and box of pennies. To top that off, I got home and sorted two rolls of dimes that the lady in front of me at the bank turned in, 7 more silver roosevelt's ummm, what a day, got me 90% excited for the day :) Oh here's a pic

Yikes, looks like a lady cashed in her husbands coin collection at face. Good deal for you, bad for her. This is why I have a list in my safe and what to do with the coins.

What the heck is up with these brain damaged elderly women.

They haven't made mercs for 60 years. At what age do they become completely confused. I come across these people all the time. Thank goodness I'm a man destined to die young.

Unbeliveable.

I think referring to them as brain damaged is too much and inappropriate. They simply don't know, or don't care, about the value in a silver coin. If she grew up with the coinage there is every possibility she views it as no different than what circulates now.

I was that bank teller at one time. In five years, I had a few finds like this one - and some I missed.
One of my co-workers scored a modern gold coin at face. Gold was only $400 back then, so the lesson here is there was more money in the holding than in the initial find.

Grandpa always told me, "Back in 1964..." I listened.

Just hyperbole. Sorry if I was too coarse. (inappropriate?)

Silver has been out of circulation for years. I've never seen a merc in circulation. I'm 44.
I think you're right they just don't care.

Very nice find. Its funny that people do not flinch when they see Mercuries and that they are very old or silver- but still accept them as currency. Its a coins that hasnt circulated in 60 years yet this guy knows enough to call them currency. I have always wondered if you could even spend a Barber coin without them rejescting it.

On a side note- did that teller have any funny pennies with no building on the back? Or those nickels with that Cleveland baseball teem mascot on it?

A couple of other possible takes on the situation. The elderly woman could be desperate, and spending the collection as cash was her last gasp to pay bills or obtain food money (too bad she didn't go to a coin shop)

or

the coin collection could have belonged to her husband, who passed away... and it's too painful of a memory for her to keep it around?

just playing devil's advocate.

you know what we should do? As a forum? Place a standing offer in all of our local craigslists to purchase silver at fair prices in each of our neighborhoods. If we did a bit of organization we could probably generate a small flood of offerings in these hard times. All we need to do is very slightly outbid the coin shops... maybe 9.5x face or so. Thoughts?

Slickeast brings up a important point, one that every member here whom stores PM's should heed.

A letter of instruction to the heirs of any holdings one is in possession, kept within the hoard.

I do find it interesting that so many spouse's of coin collectors would be so unwise as to the value of these collections. What does that say about our relations? (Just a question, please don't take offense)

Oh! Nice Find Scotty! Hopefully more will follow! It pays to be diligent!

Yes you are more diplomatic than I.

How many stories have you heard of the eldery MAN throwing away the coin collection at the teller's cage.

I've offered to buy on craigslist in my area as do others.

We get flagged and heckled as crooks trying to steal people's possesions. I stay away.

I have found those that are flagging are the competition. I don't take it personal and look at it as an opportunity to re-post at the top of the listing page.

I get the same on my ads for free appliance removal! Almost daily someone flags and I re-post straight to the top of the listings in the wanted section. Those that call are always pleased they did.

For my coin ads I always state clearly that I invest in metal not numismatic. I give coinflation.com as a reference for those interested so that they are informed of current market prices.

When poised with coins that have a numismatic value I let them know that other parties would possibly pay more though they may wish to pick and choose from your collection. I give a price for the entire amount wished to be sold based on metal value only just as my local dealer.

I only run coin ads once a month, I run appliance/scrap ads daily!

Gee, I have at many times thought some sort of letter might be needed in case something happened to me. I'm nearly positive my wife wouldn't know what to do with over half of what I have stashed pretty much everywhere around the house. Check any drawer at my house, there's sure to be something coin/bullion related in it :) I kinda invision it being sort of a treasure hunt, but I'm sure she wouldn't see it the same way. It would more than likely be ahhh more of Scott's coins...

With that much stuff lying around, you might need a partner

He might be in Texas, its a small state, so he shouldn't be too hard to find.

This reminds me of when my grandpa passed away. He had his small hoard of coins stashed away in his safe. However, his guns and ammo were all over the house. He had about 20 pistols on his permit. It took us a month and an half to find all of them. As for the ammo, we would go around the house with a box, pick it all up and put it in the gun room. The next day we would find another box of this and that ammo scattered around the house.

His small hoard of coins is what got me back into the hobby after 30 years of not collecting.

Humm, I would note that I have guns as well but yet just another target for you. I'm not too concerned about theft around here, besides I sold most of my silver in late 2009 when it went over 18.00, right around 25k worth. So not a whole lot left laying around. I just talked my 7 year old daughter into buying 800.00 dollars in silver from me. I'm selling it for 10X face so she's getting a good deal I just have to find another hiding spot for it though. The Indians are heading for new homes so I'm just gearing up to buy a truck load of silver once it dips to 15.00 or so again...crossing my fingers. That goes into a secrect special drawer, good luck trying to find it

looks like you timed your sale last year very well. Don't worry about me coming for you... but Slickeast already has nightvision goggles and a gps tracking system trying to pinpoint your house. You know he is CIA, right? The night shift manager at the grocery store thing is just his cover. He isn't really supposed to operate domestically, but all that silver could really fund some of his black ops.

So the takeaway from this ladies and gents is that hanging out in front of banks and following old ladies in can be a worthwhile investment strategy!
