well, you guys haven't converted me yet from a copper sorter to a CWR's searcher... but I am paying closer attention now to teller trays while in the bank then I did before. As I was returning zincs today there were two dimes cuddling in the clads, so I told the teller to "give me a dollar's worth, and those are the ones I want" as I pointed them out. "These are worth more," she says "I can take them to The Galleria and get twelve times for them." "Yeah, maybe," I said, "but I collect them, so I'd like to have them." She was reluctant to give them to me, but what could she do? I probably caught her red-handed (planning to cash them out of her till, but hadn't had a chance yet... they were at the very bottom of her dime stack). So the tellers ARE on to our game, and they get to play by different rules. Not fair On the other hand, a bit of persistence paid off with two Mercs, a 1945 and a 1939S in XF condition

Lots of tellers are like that- mostly the older ones. They will sniff out the silver and keep it for themselves. I even asked for halves once and she said I already took the silver out and shows me a $10-20 face stack of silver. You cant have these, but you can have the regular ones as she proceeds with the clads.
I have heard that when a teller exchanges out the silver that its embezzlement because she is taking something of value owned by her employer and swapping it out knowingly with a clad reaping benefits that her employer doesnt know. Interesting point |

| Poor lady, lots of responsibility, hassles and a low paying job then you come and take her trill of the day away from her. It's not illegal for her to cash them out you know. She did you a big favor. Why not make it up to her and cut a deal with her on future finds? |

So if she knowingly sells them to you at face then it would be in malfeasance of her duties wouldn't she? |

| Rock on! If its still in public view I say it's fair game to anyone wise and sharp enough to notice it. It is the bank's money, not the teller's. You cant blame the tellers though. It would be a flat out lie if anyone on this forum said that they wouldn't buy out the silver that came their way if they were a teller. It's just a perk of the job. |

| I have had many tellers show me the silver they found. As long as the bank allows them to do this and they buy the coins, they are not doing anything wrong. Even if the bank does not allow then to swap out change, they will just set it aside and call their friend to come buy it. If they know what they have, we lose. |

The teller's at my dump bank are coin hawks.
That's why it's a dump bank. But their attitude makes them team players.
The tellers at the source bank think I'm an idiot, but they love me and I love them.
Edit especially on casual Friday when I pick up |

I've seen numerous silver dimes in teller trays and I always point them out to the teller and ask for them. It is a trick of theirs to put any silvers right at the bottom of the dime stack. If you see silvers on the bottom you ain't gettin 'em...they are saving them for themselves. When they tell me they are saving that one I never argue...don't want to get on their bad side. Let them have an occasional silver too!!!

I think that if it is in the teller tray it is fair game. If the banks let them buy it I don' tthink that they are doing anything wrong. I do know a few banks that won't let the tellers buy.
Edit: That said, I haven't ever fought one over silver in the tray either. When they say no, it's o.k. with me. |

I came across the same thing today at a bank.. I saw two silver dimes buried at the bottom of her tray. I asked for those two dimes and she said she was saving them.. I told her no problem.. When I come across banks with tellers like this I keep them in mind as dump banks. Because they are already keeping an eye out for the good stuff.
I also remember the banks where the tellers hand over the stacks of silver and say that they are sorry they don't have more.. Yeah so am I. But I will be back.. |
